TexAgs Spring Tour: Justin Northwest
Today's stop was to the west side of I35-W to see one of the top prospects in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Offensive tackle Darrell Simpson (6-7, 315) has been on college radars since his freshman year, and offers have arrived from across the country. The size immediately jumps off the page, but he has improved his footwork and his strength. He has also done a better job of staying low and maintaining leverage which is hard for the big guys. Over the course of the spring camp circuit, he has proven himself to be one of the top prospects in Texas, and today, I saw much of the same. He has a look of a top 20 prospect in Texas and is one of the top offensive tackles in the country. Today, he showed me a lot. He was a leader. He was the first, or one of the first, in his group from station to station. During the toughest part of drills, he was the first to jump out and take a rep. Then he followed that rep with several more. When he was not going, depending on the situation, he was cheering or talking trash. Whether he was on the field or on the sidelines, he was engaged and he was leading. On the field, I saw more of what I saw at the Opening Regional and at the Under Armour camps. He was quick with his hands, he kept a good base. The footwork was sound. He finished blocks. It was a good day.On the recruiting front, he just released his top eight of Arkansas, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas A&M, Ohio State, LSU, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma State. He is looking to visit College Station soon. Today, he mentioned trying to visit this summer. He also said he plans to wait until after the season to further narrow his list. Coach Price is leading this process for the Aggies.https://twitter.com/Jason_Howell/status/855403042954518530***********Simpson may be the bell cow, but colleges are going to want to stop by Northwest to see quite a few prospects. Quarterback Prince Mavula (6-3, 195) completed 262 of 436 passes for 3,546 yards and 36 TDs in his career and has eight rushing TDs. He holds an offer from Northeastern St., and is also drawing attention from Texas State. Last fall, he earned first-team all-district honors and against McKinney North he accounted for 9 total touchdowns (7 passing, 2 rushing). Offensive lineman Josh Campbell (6-4, 300) brings the intensity and the personality. He has a scholarship offer from Southwestern Oklahoma State and while he is a tackle at Northwest, he is prospect to move inside on the college level. Linebacker David Wilson (6-1, 220) and receiver Leonardo Saldana (6-2, 180) are also drawing attention this spring.https://twitter.com/Jason_Howell/status/855398079100596224In the 2019 class, running back DeMareus Hosey (6-0, 190) has a strong build, and he will get a chance to step into the spotlight as a junior. Wide receiver Quentin Lee (6-0, 170) will get an opportunity to take a step forward in 2017. On the defensive side, lineman Malik Moore (5-11, 240) may be undersized but he has an active motor and very is disruptive in the trenches.
