Around Texas: A round-up of recruiting news in the Lone Star State
The class of 2019 is getting a major push from college coaching staffs this offseason, and prospects are narrowing their choices. Jason Howell runs down all the latest news in this week's edition of Around Texas.
Recruiting notes on some visitors
-We'll start out of state. The California 7 on 7 group that came to town did not include DeGabriel Floyd or Mycah Pittman as we previously thought. There were some kids from Cali that made it in, but none as high profile as those two. Some better news was that I've been told Florida DT Jaquaze Sorrells is having a fantastic time and will be staying another night in College Station. He's with his HS coach on the visit. Folks near Sorrells think he'll leave Florida to play college ball. The Aggies, Oregon, and South Carolina are the best bets currently. I've heard Miami is the only school in the sunshine state with a legitimate chance as things currently stand. It was also floated to me that Sorrells plans on making a return trip to Aggieland this fall, most likely in week two when the Ags host Clemson. -I spoke very briefly with St Pius QB Grant Gunnell today. Like it always was in the past, I was told the trip went really good, and both parties left the day feeling positive about the visit. Gunnell spoke with the staff after the scrimmage, and Tim Brewster and Darrell Dickey both spoke with Gunnell from what I was told. I'll speak more with Grant soon, but don't be surprised if he's back on campus next month for the spring game. -Gunnell came with OU RB commit and Aggie legacy Isaiah Spiller. The Klein Collins star sat down one on one with Jay Graham to end the day. Those talks were productive for both sides as Spiller got to hear what the new staff thought of his game and the staff got to hear where Spiller was at in terms of his recruitment. He picked Oklahoma in November because, at the time, it felt more of a fit than A&M did. Obviously, the dynamic at A&M has changed, and it'll be interesting to see how this relationship continues to facilitate.
