Around Texas: A round-up of recruiting news in the Lone Star State
Summer just began, but some of the state's biggest programs are already loading up on the recruiting trail for the 2018 and 2019 classes. Jason Howell keeps you up to date on all of the latest happenings inside.
Notes from the Golden Triangle
I managed to make some of the rounds while visiting family in the last 24 hours or so and picked up some pretty good info.-I went out to PNG today to watch A&M commit Keynel McZeal workout. The more I see of Keynel, the more I'm convinced the Ags got a huge steal here. For a kid his size, athletic movements (particularly running) come very easy and natural. He's extremely smooth for that stature. I hadn't really noticed his ability to change direction until today either. Athletically, I don't know if you'll find a more gifted kid in Texas for what the Aggies want him to do. PNG is also home to 2019 QB Roschon Johnson. He's a 6-1 baby faced kid that coaches around the Golden Triangle have been raving about. The kid oozes leadership and work ethic, there's no question about that. I don't know that I've been more impressed with a kid that young since I started doing this stuff. Extremely well spoken. Confident. Hard working. All the extra stuff you're looking for in a quarterback. He played some varsity ball as a freshman and will be the full time starter for the Indians this year. Put me down as a fan of this future dual threat stud.-The biggest name in the 409 this year is PA Memorial's Kary Vincent and while I didn't talk to Kary, I was able to touch base with some folks close to his recruitment. They both believe Kary's still wide open but that there are a group of schools that will have the best shot - with the Aggies in that group along with Bama, Texas, and others. I believe the Aggies will keep one spot open in their secondary for a guy like Kary, a talent that would close out the 2017 defensive backfield haul with a bang. -A couple more quick notes: 2017 RB Calvin Tyler has transferred to Silsbee from Beaumont Ozen. Tyler received some attention from the Aggies early on but looks like he may be headed to Berkeley now. 2017 Nederland OL Corbin Smith is gaining a little traction with some P5 schools, including Stanford. While I think he's way down the board for the Ags currently, more than one member of the A&M staff was in the area to see him in the last few months. Lastly, look for 2018 Beaumont Central safety John Ruffin to start pulling in offers. I had more than one head coach tell me the kid is a big time player. That's it from me. I'm about to head to Sulphur for tonight's A&M/Tulane satellite camp. I'll make another thread with updates from there later this evening.
