High school notes and thoughts from my weekend
- Haynes King and Eli Stowers are not only very talented QBs, but they are great fits for the Texas A&M offense. They run complex offenses where they are given a lot of pre-snap responsibilities. They work out of the shotgun and go under center, and they are dual threat guys who know how to extend plays with the legs and run if needed.-King is a no-nonsense leader on the field. He can run, but he is a pass first guy. His eyes are always downfield unless it's a designed run and he is well versed in the art of carrying out fakes. He put the ball in some tight windows Friday night, and made some nice throws under pressure. One thing I like about him is his ball placement, even on incompletions. The polish, the intelligence, the athleticism, it's a very impressive overall package. He did not disappoint.-My favorite play from King was the throw right before halftime to setup the field goal. It was a clutch throw into a tight window, with little room for error due to time in the game and the needed placement of the ball.https://twitter.com/Jason_Howell/status/1170149669395193856?s=20-Stowers' size and frame are the first things you notice, but one thing he has done quickly this fall is put to bed any talk that he was just a big athlete and may not be a QB. Now he still has some rough edges to his game, but he is definitely a QB and one of the best in the country. -It is also clear Stowers is very comfortable in the clutch. He was more than ready to roll when Guyer got the ball back and he had a chance to lead a game winning drive. He also didn't flinch when a penalty put Guyer behind the chains with time ticking down. He made a couple of gains on the ground to put Guyer back on plan.-Stowers' deep ball is a thing of beauty and he has great confidence in it. He throws it with touch and zip, and he can drop it in the bucket way down field.-In his short to intermediate throws, it looks like he's trying to put a lot of touch on it and it results in him taking too much off of it at times. I would like to see him just let it rip more.-I've heard some of the talk about 5-star, and he may get there eventually, but I'm not going there yet. He's definitely one of the top QBs in the country though and solid top 15 in Texas prospect.-I'll just leave this clip here, it's a good one from Guyer's game winning drive.https://twitter.com/Jason_Howell/status/1170439718036746240?s=20-Cedar Hill QB Kaidon Salter is going to be a great pick-up for someone. He is a dual-threat QB with a big arm and who can make throws from a variety of arm slots. He is a P5 QB, there's no doubt in my mind. Very impressive. -Cedar Hill may be the best 0-2 program in the state. They will make a lot of noise come playoff time.-Guyer is for real. And Kaedric Cobbs is going to make some team very, very happy. The Guyer RB is incredibly smart, like top of his class smart, and he is a strong, physical runner with more versatility than he's credited with. He also has a tremendous work ethic and desire.-Longview is good, but they are not as strong as last year. It will be interesting to see how the inexperience at OL and WR develops over the course of the season.-Longview 2021 RB Kaden Meredith is fun to watch. He is a strong, explosive back, who always seems to fall forward. He is also a big factor in the return game.-Longview 2020 DL Sawyer Goram-Welch was all over the place Friday night. He wants to play defense and he has plenty of opportunities. -Arlington Martin may be the most fun team I have see this year. Martin opened the game with 100-yard kickoff return, blocked a punt for a TD, recovered and returned a bad shotgun snap for a TD, and blocked a field goal to setup a field goal. -30 yards of offense with a 24-point halftime lead is something else. I don't think I've seen anything like it before. -Hebron and Martin both have swarming defenses that are going to be match-up issues for their opponents.-2022 RB Isaiah Broadway was impressive in a loss for Hebron. His 36-yard TD run was pretty. It was a decisive run and he exploded right through the middle of the Martin defense for 6. He is also versatile and can be a weapon in the passing game and in the return game. -Martin 2022 DE Ernest Cooper IV is an intriguing prospect. He is very long at 6-4, 215, but he is light in his lower body. He does a good job of using his length, working his hands, maintaining leverage, and he was able to generate pressure on a regular basis. He will be one to watch as he fills out and develops more strength. He is also well aware of Martin alum Myles Garrett and that Terry Price coached him at Texas A&M. Prime 21 Camp Thread (Post Camp Thoughts, Recruiting Notes, Primer, and Highlights)
Post Camp Thoughts-The Texas QB talent in 2021 is flat out nasty. Behren Morton Dematrius Davis Garrett Nussmeier all showed very well on the day and caught my attention at different points during the camp.-The LBs really jumped out to me. Derrick Harris Jr is making a strong case to be my favorite all-around LB in Texas for 2021. Love the frame, the length, his quickness, and ability against the run and in coverage. He is a stud. Clayton Smith is more of an OLB/edge guy in my mind but he showed he could do some damage in coverage. 2022 Kobie McKinzie is a name to remember and while Jordan Crook has a compact build he is stout, smart, and quick. -FL WR Mario Williams and Allen WR Bryson Green made some highlight reel plays in one-on-ones. It didn't matter what DBs did those two made plays. Isaiah Brevard had a strong showing in 7-on-7 action. J Michael Sturdivant turned plenty of heads with his play. He's a fluid runner with size. Jaedon Wilson started off slow, but picked things up nicely. His route running kept DBs off balance throughout the day. Armani Winfield was also a standout. He just makes it look effortless. As for Skyline WR and Texas commit Quaydarius Davis, he was really good as well. His hands were a little inconsistent, but he brings the swagger, and physical play and speed to the table that is undeniable. He also tries to get a little too cute when he feels like things are too easy and I think that's part of what happened yesterday.-When it came to DBs the names Hunter Washington Jimmy Wyrick and Kavian Gaither kept popping up. All three were in lock down mode throughout the day. I also liked what I saw from Ishmael Ibraheem. At S JD Coffey has added some nice weight and plays with great instincts, and Kaine Williams is an enforcer on the back end. A new name to keep an eye on is Cy Ranch S Romario Noel. His size and physical play were two things that jumped out to me. ***********Recruiting NotesNew Caney LB Derrick Harris Jr - 2021-Texas A&M, Texas, Miami, and Baylor are schools that stand out right now. -the family feeling at A&M stood out.-Coach Peveto will coach you and tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.-He will be at the A&M BBQ on Friday.Galena Park North Shore QB Dematrius Davis - 2021-Florida State, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Baylor standout right now.-The great offense and Jimbo Fisher being there long term make A&M stand out.-He will visit LSU (July 25), Baylor and Texas A&M (July 26), Baylor (July 27), Georgia, Virginia Tech, Alabama, and Clemson.-He plans to wait until around October to make a decision so he can talk to coaches early in the fall and find out more about their interest.Marrero (LA) John Ehret S Kaine Williams - 2021-LSU, Texas A&M, Alabama, and Florida were a few schools he said have his attention right now.-the facilities, the school, and the coaches stand out about the Aggies-He visited College Station in the spring, it was his first trip, and he said it felt like he was still in Louisiana-No trips plannedSeffner (FL) Armwood WR Agiye Hall - 2021-named his top 12 and they're the teams who pass the ball, put people in the NFL, and have coaches he feels he can trust.-Clemson, Georgia, and Florida were a few schools that stood out from his spring trips.-When it comes to Texas A&M, Jimbo Fisher is his guy and he is building that relationship. -Coach Fisher is cool and he knows what he is talking about.-OU, Texas, LSU, and USC visits are on his schedule, and he plans to visit Texas A&M and LSU during his bye week this fall.Cibolo Steele DB Kaleb Higgins - 2021-He is moving to Folsom (CA) before the fall.-Spent three days at A&M camp this summer and earned an offer-Also holds offers from Baylor and Boston College-No big preseason trips on the schedule right now, planning to visit Texas A&M for the Alabama game with Jaylon JonesLewisville WR Armani Winfield - 2022-Camped at Texas and Texas A&M-How the Aggies greeted him really caught his attention-He likes how close it is to home, that they're in the SEC, and that they throw the ball.-He will visit A&M for the BBQ July 26, he will visit OU for their BBQ.Southaven (MS) WR Isaiah Brevard - 2021 -Excited to compete and learn from Deion Sanders-Worked on his speed and route running this summer -Went to camps at Texas A&M, Ole Miss-Loved Jimbo Fisher and the coaching staff, especially the WR coach, gonna be back up there soonTexarkana Texas High LB Clayton Smith - The formula includes publicly listed grades, scores, ratings and rankings by national recruiting services, along with a TexAgs rating. Combining the data provides a rating for each prospect, which is then normalized to fit the TexAgs Rating 100-point scale.

The intent of this rating is to provide TexAgs readers with a comprehensive snapshot of how individual prospects rank nationally.

TexAgs Rating

The TexAgs Recruiting team of Billy Liucci, David Sandhop, Jason Howell, Ryan Brauninger and a host of recruiting interns attends more than 75 games each fall and observes and evaluates every major Texas A&M target, as well as most of the top 150 prospects in the State of Texas. From this evaluation the team draws a rating for each prospect on a scale between 70 and 100.

99-100: Elite national prospect (Five-star)

Considered one of the best prospects in the nation and a likely difference-maker at the collegiate level. Displays all of the physical skills to be a future All-American with potential to be an early-round NFL draft pick.

90-98: Elite state prospect (Four-star)

Considered one of the best 30-40 prospects in the state and a top 250 national prospect. Displays the physical skills to be a major early contributor at the collegiate level with high professional potential.

80-89: Quality prospect (Three-star)

Considered one of the best 100 prospects in the state and a top 500 national prospect. Displays the physical skills to develop into a contributor over the course of his college career. Has the ability to become a professional prospect over time with development.

70-79: Solid prospect (Two-star)

Considered one of the top 250 prospects in the state. Has the physical skills to be a potential contributor at a D-1 program over the course of his collegiate career with significant development. Professional potential is low.

The predictions represent which school each staff member believes will ultimately sign the recruit, and the confidence meter represents his level of certainty in that outcome.

Example #1

If the predicted school is Texas A&M and confidence is set to “High”, then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Texas A&M and I feel very certain about that.”

Example #2

If the predicted school is “Alabama” and confidence is set to “Low,” then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Alabama, but I’m not very certain about that.”
