In response to a question about overall strength of Big East this season, Stewart Mandel's response in this week CFB mailbag includes the following...

quote:
The Big East will always have an inherent "image" problem due to its size. The Big 12 can afford to carry four deadweight teams (Iowa State, Kansas State, Colorado and Texas A&M) without the league's overall standing suffering.

Man, that hurts.

It sucks. Winning against Okie St would've at least help us overcome that image somewhat. Getting close but losing doesn't help, unfortunately.

BU keeps getting more mileage out of a 4-8 season than any 4-8 team in history.

22 months into the Sherman regime and all we have is maybe's!

We win some games, the problem will go away. Baylor not making that list too is ludicrous.

This is what an awesome 10 years of football gets you. Guys, this is gonna be a slow climb back to the top.

No kidding. How many bowls have been to this decade compared to baylor? It is like 7-0.

And this says it all - There's a discussion as to whether A&M football is better than Baylor.

I have no problem with us being on the list, but as everyone else has said, Baylor should be there as well.

Any talk even bordering on if we or baylor is a better program shows you how low we are. 1 1/2 yr into this regime and we are compared to baylor?

Maybe it's just referring to this year... If not, WOW.

that is not warranted. if you look at this decade we are not dead weight at all. we have had 3 losing seasons and 6 winning seasons this decade. that is not up to par but hardly classifies us as dead weight either. dead weight is like baylor football or a&m basketball before gillispie.

the national media is piling on and has been this whole season.

We were being compared to Baylor before this regime took the wheel. Fran lost to Baylor when there was absolutley no excuse to do so.

The current regime was brought in as an answer to our problems, but no reasonable observer expects an immediate turnaround.

Although I have my doubts regarding the ability of the current staff to lead us beyond mediocrity, the slide to Baylor or near Baylor status has been in the making for quite some time.

Madell is a typical "College Football Expert". He has never taken Texas A&M seriously. He basically called us all delusional a couple of years (maybe last year) ago, thinking we should be able to compete in the Big 12.

Instead of actually doing work, he has bought into the media hard-on for Baylor. Yeah, good work, Mandell. It's funny how you're so delusional to think you are actually a "big thinker" in college football.

Who takes a program that loses to Ark State and gets blown out every time it's on national TV seriously

Umm...no. Your canned response to a negative opinion of A&M is not justified in this case. Mandel is one of the best out there.

It's simple, win and these conversations are different, lose and all you can do is whine about it.

Right now the only debate we have is where in the cellar we belong, above or below Baylor.

No one can dispute the state of the program right this second, it is SAD.

Is it improving, I am not sure, I hope, but I am not certain.

I think it's more a case of this:

quote:
He forgot Baylor even existed.

Than this:

quote:
He has never taken Texas A&M seriously. He basically called us all delusional a couple of years (maybe last year) ago, thinking we should be able to compete in the Big 12.

Who's delusional about A&M being competitive in the Big 12? They're not even competitive in the the Big 12 South. Their divisional record is 18-27 this decade, with 13 of those 18 wins coming against Baylor and OSU.

LMFAO, face. Its your opinion that Mandel is one of the best out there. The guy has been a total d-bag for years. And I dont give a **** what he said about A&M. The guy is a huge, opinionated ******r journalism major that never played a down of football in his life.

Just because you like him doesnt mean "he's one of the best out there"
FtBendTxAg

Mandel is on par with Gregg Doyel of CBS Sports.

And just because he said something bad about A&M doesn't mean he's awful.

He's a pretty good sports journalist, but he's a little off on this one.

Similarly, just because you don't like him doesn't mean that he's a d-bag who's wrong 90% of the time. And he's a columnist. It's kind of his job to be opinionated. You know, like you're being right now.
FtBendTxAg
1:30p, 10/14/09
No, he's literally wrong 88 per cent of the time.
FtBendTxAg
1:33p, 10/14/09
And yes, I was being a hypocrite.

But his bowl projections+game predictions = 12-16 per cent success rate.

He sucks.
rwtxag83
1:37p, 10/14/09
He mentioned us beacuse we are a 'name team' that is fairly nationally recognizable, and we happen to be down right now. Most people on a national scale don't think of Baylor as often.

As has been stated, win, and this won't be an issue.

I think we are on the right track, but time will tell.
FtBendTxAg
1:39p, 10/14/09
we just better beat KSU this week.. or we'll be headed down the Baylor path of football suck

So by that rationale, all commentators and columnists who have played a down of football are more credible. I guess we should bow down before the likes of Brian Jones and Trevor Matich when they say things like "Colt McCoy can take a hit better than Sam Bradford."

As the previous poster stated, as a journalist and columnist he is paid to have an opinion. That opinion generates feedback for one of his columns. But judging by your Draconian generalizations, lack of understanding of the concept of what a columnist does, and inability to string together two sentences without cursing, I'd wager that your'e exactly the type of reader who makes Mandel successful by sending him anger-laced and indignant emails that he can later pull up and refute when the results on the field prove otherwise.
