This could be interesting, Depending on how they do it, it could trigger the right, the left or both. There are a lot of ways they could do this

They could be very sympathetic towards Monica and focus on how she was a kid that was exploited by both sides, or just keep it focused on Clinton being a predator, or lean into the hypocrisy of people like Newt who was having an affair at the same time.

Either way it will be interested to see how it done from a post trump world view or everything that came out with Ken star at Baylor.

Someone is going to love this and someone is going to hate it

HBO is killing it with the limited series as of late.

I wonder if they made a conscious choice to lean more into those than full series.

For whatever reason, limiteds are all the rage in Hollywood right now. A couple years ago no one wanted limiteds, we were told studios were only looking for multi-season series, etc. Now, we're about to shop a new series around town but are thinking about pitching it as a limited instead, because limiteds are selling way more than multi-season series.

But yeah, HBO, specifically, is on fire right now with limiteds.

Surprised that short films aren't getting much traction. I thought with Two Distant Strangers we saw a possible turning point to focus more on shorts - seems like a terrific bang for your buck for streamers. Or are they getting traction and I'm just not aware?

Shorts just don't make a lot of sense financially. Gearing up and casting for something that's so short, and only a quick, one-time thing, just isn't practical for most studios.

I don't know - the gear up, gear down cost in theory is the same for a 40 min movie as it is for a four hour movie. But if one gets you (you being a streamer that doesn't care about theaters' demands) more eyeballs, and possibly gives you more flexibility (shorter time commitments of cast and crew) why would it matter (plus the shorter time commitment might mean less salary expenses)? And, with the added flexibility and shorter shoot times, you could shorten the window from green lighting to available to watch, giving you the opportunity to react to news and trends more quickly (again, Two Distant Strangers).

I think its because the star talent is more interested in doing one-offs than signing multi-year contracts. It allows movie stars the ability to do "prestige" tv with a commitment that is similar to a movie and the ability to keep doing other projects.

Streaming providers (the hypothetical buyer in your scenario) want content. They want more, not less. That's what is sort of unique about the HBO shorts and why all of the Netflix limited series are 6 episodes when you only needed 4.5 to tell the story fully. If you can package your shorts into a series and it also is a labor of love for the leading actors/creators you can end up with something like documentary now. You might also see some of the short films like you describe coming from the large content deals that certain stars (like the Southpark guys, and i think Reese Witherfork) who get a big check to make lots of things. They know the goal is still 1. hit original series or reality series, and 2. the scalable movie franchise, but if they have some story they love that belongs at 40min stand alone they have the platform to produce and distribute it.
