Funny how Powells story changes daily. Funny as I thought she knew the truth?

Wonder why they don't just talk to Outside The Lines? They've got the truth as they talked to a recruit who went to another school. Thumbs up to ESPN!

Turns out when you publish a book admitting to be a prostitute, there could be repercussions.

Don't worry Ben. given the number of different investigations going on ranging from the cops to the NCAA to UofL's own investigators, if Outside the lines and this woman have completely fabricated the story that parties with paid strippers/escorts occurred in that on-campus dorm, then they will probably eventually uncover the ESPN conspiracy.

I don't think it's a conspiracy with ESPN. I don't think ESPN is a good source of investigative journalism. ESPN is in the entertainment business.

When are they shutting down the UL program? Funny how I'm looking very right at this juncture.

Powell is meeting with the NCAA next week, so you would think the investigation will be winding up pretty quickly after that. Little early for UL to be doing any victory laps, I think.

Or victory lap dances, for that matter.

Any time Powell speaks it's good for UL. Women can't keep her lies straight. Well documented.

The NCAA has apparently already finished interviewing players, campus officials, etc. The information being handed over by Powell to the NCAA investigators this week apparently will include records of text messages and phone calls between herself and former Louisville staff Andre McGee.

My personal guess is that Pitino survives this in terms of keeping his job. However, if it is verified through the investigation that the on-campus stripper parties took place and the text message/phone records are incriminating then the Louisville program is not going to escape punishment. Probably will see things like scholarship reductions, post-season bans, suspensions, etc. coming once all the investigation stuff is concluded.

NCAA President Mark Emmert was asked today about the matter.

http://www.wdrb.com/story/30522140/crawford-emmert-declines-to-comment-on-louisville-allegations-in-cbs-interview

quote:
Emmert spoke in general about the importance of protecting the integrity of the values of college sports, then said, "Nobody likes to see those kinds of issues, but these are all programs that have great histories and really good values inside those institutions, and they're going to respond to these in an appropriate way. We're already seeing that."

Rothstein asked one question about Louisville specifically, saying, "The issues at SMU and Syracuse were academically related. The issue at Louisville is a little bit different. Potentially would the penalty be harsher because it's in a different realm?"

Emmert wouldn't commit, answering, "Well I'm not going to speculate about that. This is a case that's obviously still unfolding, an ongoing investigation both at the university level and in different realms, so it's inappropriate for me to comment on it today."

It's the first comment of any kind from an NCAA official since the publication of "Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen," in which Katina Powell alleges that she put on parties in which U of L players and recruits had sex with escorts paid for by former director of basketball operations Andre McGee. Powell claims to have been paid upwards of $10,000 from 2010 to 2014. Her book outlines 10 shows with U of L players in the dorm, and details $5,840 in money.

U of L has retained Chuck Smrt of the Kansas City-based Compliance Group to handle an independent investigation on its behalf. Every scholarship player on the current roster was interviewed by the NCAA two weeks ago, with other former recruits having indicated that they also have been approached by the NCAA.

Emmert noted on Friday that the process of determining possible violations is a collaborative effort between the NCAA and schools, with the final ruling coming from the organization's infractions committee.

Pitino now jabbing media. Doesn't look or seem like a man about to watch the hammer come down.

I was right on this. You guys took the ESPN BS.
Ben Diamond

When ESPN is the leading investigation police on a story look out. They can get 100 stories wrong and it never matters. They'll grab something and run with it and look into the truth down the line.

The fact that Lousiville had dug in and hasn't come close to brininging anything onto themselves like no tournament this year says a lot. And now Pitino coming out punching the media. The whole thing was a giant scam job.

A similar situation in Boulder back in the early 2000's caused the resignation of both the AD and president of CU. About a year later, it led to the firing of Gary Barnett.

A multiyear criminal investigation yielded one misdemeanor charge being filed. One.

Only charge coming in this will be against Powell for making it all up. She'll do jail time.

Pitino said he has not been interviewed by NCAA officials, and that he does not expect the investigation to conclude before July. He reiterated that he didn't know about any sexual improprieties in the players' dormitory -- "I guarantee if a chair gets broken in Minardi Hall and I find out about it, there's gonna be a problem," he said -- but did say he now believes McGee did commit violations.

"Did one person do some scurrilous things? I believe so," he said. "What I know now, I believe so. The only thing I don't know is I don't know why he did it. He was taught better by his parents and me."
Pitino generally defends the program and attacks Powell and the NCAA, but it sounds as if he is conceding that something inappropriate went on. I don't see how Louisville escapes this without some punishment, although it may not be severe.

So what do you think actually happened? She just had no connection whatsoever to Louisville basketball and looked up this guy's name on their Web page or something?

I'm not saying you're wrong, just don't know much about this and would like to hear the story from the other side.

I think Powell was dating McGee and they partied with recruits/players. Things went south and she needed money and made it into something it never was.

Well, the ESPN reporter is saying he's heard that at least five players have acknowledged going to these parties and one saw the Louisville coach pay Powell before he had sex with one of the girls.

I guess these witnesses could have misinterpreted what they saw, but clearly this wasn't a completely made up story. There were parties attended by Louisville recruits that included Powell, McGee, and strippers...and at least player interviewed so far screwed the strippers.

I'm open to this looking like something it isn't...but at this point your assumption that this was all a Powell fairytale does not match-up with witness testimony.

Pitino seems to think there is "real evidence." It really isn't credible to deny anything went on at this point.
Ben Diamond
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Pitino actually said he couldn't find one person who would admit to seeing anything. Pitino again is one of the few big time coaches with a squeaky clean record with the NCAA. 30+ years with no major rules violations. Wasn't going to start running *****s in at this point, just wasn't.
LawHall88
How long do you want to ignore this user?

And his point was people were concealing it from him, not that it didn't happen.

The fact that Pitino may have been unaware doesn't mean the school is in the clear.

Feel bad for these two kids.

The news is a bitter blow to a pair of graduate transfers who came to Louisville last summer in hopes of making their first NCAA tourney appearance. Damion Lee, a transfer from Drexel, and Trey Lewis, a transfer from Cleveland State, have been the team's top two scorers. Their college careers now will end without playing in college basketball's signature event, victims of a scandal they had nothing to do with.

Lee and Lewis are the only seniors on the Louisville roster.

How convenient that they are the only seniors on the squad.

I just caught Rick Pitino on Mike and Mike while channel surfing, so I stopped down and gave it a listen. What is the consensus on this? He is selling hard that he knew nothing, and it seems like many analysts are backing him on the whole ordeal (just based on what I've heard this week).

i think we've seen enough sordid details behind the curtain to know that Pitino is image over substance in terms of his personal integrity. He's a heckuva basketball coach, but not much of a person.

The decision for him is coming very soon. It may even come before the season ends now that he's out in the media everyday.
