Well, you could theorize that the man that did the killing knew that the cop was going to be meeting someone at the gas station at a certain time. And while he absolutely still killed the guy, if someone else paid him to do so, then there's definitely a bigger story afoot.

Assuming the story about the deputy and the woman is true, at the very least you can theorize that if he hadn't been screwing around on his wife/kids and not been meeting his girlfriend at a gas station while on duty, he might not have gotten shot that night.

Even if it's nothing more than the guy having a girlfriend, it stinks that he's being lauded as a saint and he was a sinner like the rest of us.

History shows that it could have been a conspiracy between the mob and the CIA. Pointless speculation just to add something salacious to the discussion.

It will come out if true. This guy's facing the death penalty. if he can give someone up in return for taking that off the table, he will. And the DA would prob take that deal.

If it was a hit job why did the guy just go back to his moms house?

The dude was mental almost killed someone in a homeless shelter, I still think the guy was just ****ing crazy and had probably had a recent run in with Goforth or the law.

I don't necessarily think it's a hit job. It would have definitely come out by now if Miles had received a large sum of money recently.

I do think it's possible that Miles and the girlfriend are connected in some way, even if it's by a relative/friend/other lover/crush who wasn't pleased about her relationship with the cop. I could see Miles randomly running into them at the gas station and in his mentally ill state think shooting the cop was a good idea.

Insanity defense only works if you didn't really know what you were doing... The guy was crazy, but he probably knew that he was shooting a cop and that that is bad.

Prior poster brought the possibility it was a hit job.

In my mind, I figured he died for being a white cop and closed it off. After reading this thread and thinking about it more, I'm open to other scenarios,

It appears that the guy's attorney is clearly indicating this was not a murder-for-hire situation, so we can put that question/speculation to rest.

I did think it odd the reaction that the woman had when he was shot. They would have had to be very close, maybe I'm in the minority here, but as a married man; I certainly don't have a best friend of the opposite sex. When I was single, I had friends that were women, but if they were hot I pretty much wanted to bed all of them.

I have 2 very close female friends. My wife has very close male friends. No big deal.

The argument not there for his job doesn't seem to hold water since he was in uniform filling his patrol vehicle. Yes he may have chosen that station for a reason but I don't think this will lower the charge.

But it could affect a jury.

Jury's don't tend to be too forgiving to people who kill cops.

It's going to take a lot more than this to convince anybody not to give him the death penalty.

You get some religious nut jobs in there, and they might see it as "righteous retribution".

There is one report out there by the Daily Mail that said the female was actually in the car when Goforth was shot. If that's true, the lawyer has a strong case against him being there in an official capacity. Coyple that with the history of mental illness and being found not competent to stand trial in Austin and the DA is going to bargain away the death penalty.

I still think the female has something to do with it, knowingly or not. Unless meeting her every night was a common occurrence, getting shot while on the job while stealing some face time with your mistress is really bad luck.

I just feel even worse for the wife and kids now. Talk about salt in the wound.

If it comes out that he was an adulterer meeting a mistress, that should be between him and God and shouldn't factor into the trial at all. People don't write off everything MLK ever did just because he was banging escorts in his hotels before his big speeches/rallies. That didn't make his killing a "little more ok".

Yep. I was in the funeral biz for five years. A lot of people find out really negative things about their loved ones when the person dies.
