Frio - I thought the same thing. If the plane goes forward, of course its gonna take of. Is this the debate you people have been having for the last year? Duh...of course if the plane goes faster than the conveyor belt its going to eventually take off if it gets up enough speed. It just takes longer for it to reach the necessary speed to take off. This is similar to adding some other kind of drag or resistance.
I believe the question actually posited whether the plane would take off if the conveyor belt moved in the reverse direction at the same speed as the plane was going forward (staying in place). If this was not the question, then this thread has been a waste of my time.

If the plane moves forward at sufficient speed it takes off. If it doesnt move forward no takeoff (unless you are on another planet with amazing winds).
The way the mythbusters did it, I don't understand the point of the conveyor.

But see that's misleading. The way I have always been explained the myth was "the wheels are going as fast as the belt" In that case, the plane would not move, and would not take off. However, as it was done the wheels were going TWICE as fast as the belt, therefor it got up to speed to take off.
