edit: for colt

I don't think the original argument had anything to with planes in a vacuum.

that's like asking if a sailboat will move in a vacuum...

No they don't, but if the conveyor was capable of infinite speeds, it could turn fast enough to keep the plane in place. Theoretically.

Here's a real life example to see if it's clear for y'all...

Get on a treadmill. Put the speed on HIGH. Run as fast as you can to stay in place.

Now, how fast is the wind blowing on your face?

Just as fast as it would be blowing over the wings of the airplane...

Neurotic, no it doesn't. Hell, the conveyor could be moving 1000 mph backwards and the plane would still travel forwards under the thrust provided by the engines or propellors.

The wheels have friction. You should know that.

Using a running on a treadmill example shows your understanding of airplanes.

IM pretty sure they can figure this out with model scale equipment.

Only because the conveyor would have infinite mass from the respect of the airplane and gravity would become a problem.

I didn't realize there was a treadmill big enough or fast enough that could make this actually be tested.

Ag with kids, have someone push that person forward and I'll bet they will move.

gosh this is so simple

Ag with kids, you are wrong.

Friction between feet and the ground are the only way runners can accelerate. Airplanes don't depend on the friction between the landing gear and runway to gain momentum.

Am I reading it wrong or are they testing to see if a plane can take off if it isn't moving and the wind isn't blowing at 100mph?

If this is what they are testing, I will kill myself for being part of this species.

This is correct. However, there is still friction there that could be manipulated to hold the plane in place. Again, theoretically.

The problem is that you dont have a jet engine attached to your face...thats what you need.

The idea is to not manipulate the friction NA. It is to have a normal airplane.

That isn't what they are testing. They are testing to see if the airplane can accelerate down a conveyor belt that matches the speed of the airplane's wheels.

If the airplane can accelerate, air will flow over the wing, and the airplane will take-off. If it can't, there will be a Texags meltdown the likes of which Brandon can't even comprehend.

Lift is a function of the airflow above and below the wing and the resulting differential pressure. No flow = no lift = no flight.

Glad to hear the problem is that I have no reading comprehension skills and not that people think a stationary conventional airplane can take off.

Think of it this way.

An airplane in this experiement powered by its jet engines or prop

vs.

An airplane moving forward because there is a drveshaft making the wheels push it forward (like a car).

One of these ain't gonna take off. I think the other will.
