To those of you who do not know me, I am a chief engineer on a very high profile aircraft program.

Please accept this as the definitive answer to this question.

Here is how the question is formulated:

The answer is clearly no. When an air vehicle reaches Vr relative to some control volume of air it's in, it will take off. At Vr, the lift on the wings, which is purely a function of airspeed relative to the air vehicle, exceeds the weight of the air vehicle and it flies.

In the question, as posed, the air vehicle is traveling at V=0 relative to the air (except for any slight air flow at the surface of the conveyor belt due friction between the air and the belt) and thus will just sit there.

This is final - no discussion of wheel speed or length of conveyor belt or any of that other nonsense is relevant.

Yes, teh question is formulated exaclty such that the airplane must have V=0 relative to a bystander. Read the question I posted.

I think the confusion on this issue is that everyone formulates the question a little differently.

I have posted the question as it is normally posted on the Internet and the answer is definitively NO the airplane will not fly.

The confusion seems to be that everyone thinks it's just a word riddle - it is not, at least not the way I worded it.
