Next time make sure you do a little research about what to do when you get there. It can be pretty overwhelming if you don't already have some sort of plan. We always plan out our "nice" meals before we go, so we can make sure that we get those in. If we are going to go see a show, we plan that in advance too. For me, if I get there with no plan, there's so much to look around at, by the time it's time to eat, I have no idea where to go.

So about five years ago my friends planned a trip Vegas on a budget. We had fun but they pre planned all the expensive stuff.

When we got there we rented a car and went to the Grand Canyon. We checked into the hotel and then went to dinner at a well recommended place off the strip and for less than $25 each we were stuffed with fantastic Thai food and wine. We went downtown to Freemont and then they guys took the car back to the airport after our trip off the strip. We probably spent $60 renting a minivan for the day instead of cabs, uber, or shuttles.

They planned out three shows - a showgirls show, a comedy club and Love. I have no idea where the found the deals (groupon?). Anyhow they found some great deals although we only saw one name brand show. During the day we did our own thing and went to all the shopping and gambling areas but of course didn't buy much. We didn't do sit down restaurants for breakfast or lunch, but that was fine with us, we just found something nearby. We went to 2 fancy places for dinner.

We stayed at Ballys because it was literally $45 a night for each room. So this was a big cost savings, and they had cheaper limits on the tables.

Anyhow for three days of partying it was about $250 a person plus airfare and any booze we paid for and money we lost. I will say we hit up the discount times when buying drinks. There was a candy store and there was an attached restaurant/bar. Apparently in the afternoon they had half price fishbowl drinks at the bar. Me and a friend partook since it was a giant drink for $10, and I know we ate at an Italian place for dinner and went to the comedy club that night but the details are blurry.

Anyhow nice fun can be had for cheaper with some planning.

3-5 dollar minimums downtown. no pressure if your not gambling to get free drinks. dollar beers, cheap wells all day every where and if you lose 60 bucks you get a breakfast.

Downtown is the only way to go if you're there to gamble, sportsbook ect.. IMO and it's affordable and has pumped in a lot of money into some of the casino renovations. It's old school

Can you recommend specific casinos? I'm going next month and will heed your advice.

They're all really close together in downtown Fremont area. It got turned into a big pedestrian strip. Golden Nugget and all the classics. The D is nearby and is a good hybrid between the strip and Fremont.

Can't remember the other places I've been but I was happy in each of them. Friendlier people down there on Fremont.

For downtown check out The D & Golden Gate (both owned by the same guy). Golden Nugget is the nicest downtown and their limits will be a bit higher. Downtown Grand was recently remodeled and is decent, but is usually a ghost town.

Believe me, you wouldn't want to get into anything with any of the inhabitants of the 4 Queens casino, for any amount of money.....

My sister got married at the Nugg...yeah, we are that kind of family.

I was really impressed with that hotel. Win % seemed higher. Drinks were free if you gambled. They also have one of the most kickass pool attractions in Vegas (you slide through an aquarium). Plus Fremont street is really, really cool. You're also a 10 minute cab ride to the strip if that's more your fancy.

For those folks (like myself) who aren't the highest of rollers...

If you are stuck on the strip - Check out the greatness of Casino Royale (nest to Harrahs). Cheap table limits all the time, and 100x odds at the craps table. And if you lose all of your day's gambling budget in a hurry (again - usually like myself), they sell 1 dollar Michelob Lights all day every day. And for an added bonus, there is a White Castle located right in the casino! What's not to love about that.

Why do you think people on a budget are concerned with 100X odds?

Understanding odds and having a budget are two totally different things. My point was if you're concerned about paying $5 per roll, do you think they are throwing down hundreds just because they have a very slight odds advantage? Of course not. Read the thread. It's about Vegas on the cheap....not "Vegas, how to play the odds"

Oh yeah...FIFY

Wife and I go about twice a year. We go because it's a 3 day, no kids, no holds barred, do whatever the F we want trip. Sleep, gamble, screw, drink, screw, drink, gamble, you get the point. It's pure escapism for a married couple with children.

We fly SW out of Austin on points, pretty much spend nothing on airfare.
We have had players cards for years at Planet Hollywood/Harrah's resorts and as such have a status that we can pretty much get $30/night rooms at PH anytime except Friday and Saturday nights.

PH has ABC Stores where you can buy booze, beer, wine, and food for about 15% more than average convenience store prices.

We walk everywhere unless we really want to get down the strip. Cab back and fourth to McCarron is no big deal.

Do the Harrah's properties 24 hour buffet pass. It's like $100 per person I think but you can squeeze four meals in to that (more if you're a big eater I guess) which is a great deal.

Pro tip - get a limo at the Airport and ask for discreet driver and a bottle of champagne. $60 fee for the limo, give the drive $100 and tell him to take the long slow route to your hotel. Bang in said limo on the Vegas strip while enjoying champagne. Bucket list item, highly recommended.

We might, might blow $1000 each gambling on a trip. Typically less. Winnings end up being spent at the mall at Ceaser's. All good.

I'll do it for $100. When are you in town again?

Definitely prefer Fremont for gambling. Fun part is having to explain the odds to one of your best friends who is a former math teacher on why Fremont is better for gambling and why he shouldn't use the doubling strategy on roulette. Bachelor party was in Vegas after SHOT show this year... absolutely insane week for me. I made enough playing poker at Nugget and Flamingo (wasn't really planning on playing at Flamingo but we were there and I made a kiling) to pay for 90% of what I did while there. Of course, the biggest expense was Palomino... I took cash and left my debit card at the hotel so I did fine there. A couple groomsmen didn't... they either didn't fare so well or did a lot better than I did, depending on how you look at it.

That is what exactly what is causing the fee. The locals are doing just that and that is why Mandelay is now charging for parking.

March Madness. Deciding between Westgate auditorium stadium set up or The Chelsea at Cosmo. Both look awesome for March Madness watching and betting with mobile betting kiosks

This is just outright stupid of these casinos. The more alcohol they can get into their patrons, the more they are likely to gamble and the losing doesn't hurt as bad (until the next morning). I'm living proof of that!

What does "won big" mean with $3 hands...? $50?

Exactly. I go to the indian casino up near SF and they charge like $6 for a cheap domestic beer, so I don't drink. Which means I don't make stupid betting decisions (as often), or play as long. Which means I don't lose all my money. I believe they aren't allowed to give drinks for free, so correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't they theoretically charge like a quarter at least?

In vegas I have lost thousands because of whiskey, and the last couple times I've gone (I go at least once a year) some cocktail waitresses have been giving me **** because I ask for doubles and some casinos have stopped allowing that for some reason...

It's in their best interest to give as much free alcohol as possible.
