From the people who gave us "resort fees", reduced comps, 6-5 blackjack, now comes $10.00 self-parking (which won't be included in the "resort fee").

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/16/business/mgm-resorts-las-vegas-casinos-to-end-free-parking.html?_r=0

I know it won't affect you ballers who roll around town in casino provided limos, but it is another kick in the nuts for the middle class gambler.

We never drive in Vegas. We just walk everywhere. It sucks for the people that drive in, but otherwise, having a car never crossed our minds.

Went out to Vegas for the first time a year ago for a buddy's 40th. I thought everything was damn expensive and not really that special. I could have spent less and had more fun on a quick trip to Cozumel. And I didn't gamble.

But it wasn't my party.

Vegas isn't for cheap fun anymore. Doesn't cater to that crowd. It's glitz and glamour.

Depends a lot on the economy. During the recession a few years ago, many places stopped charging the resort fees just to try to lure more people. As the economy picked up, along with their occupancy rates, back came the resort fees.

In other words, it's all cyclical.

Go to Fremont. Cheaper and more fun than the strip, IMO.

First, if you're just going to the strip, there's no need to even have a car in the first place.
Second, park for free at a Casino who does want your business.
Third, self-parking is for lolpoors anyway Valet it.

Seriously though, park at Mandalay Bay, take the train to Excalibur... problem solved.

The charge for parking is only for MGM properties (for now....)

Mandalay Bay is an MGM owned property too.

3-5 dollar minimums downtown. no pressure if your not gambling to get free drinks. dollar beers, cheap wells all day every where and if you lose 60 bucks you get a breakfast.

Downtown is the only way to go if you're there to gamble, sportsbook ect.. IMO and it's affordable and has pumped in a lot of money into some of the casino renovations. It's old school

I think it all depends on your expectations. At the higher end casinos, dropping $100 on blackjack isn't going to get you a free room and meal. However, you can still get decent room rates and meal prices at the mid-level strip casinos. When I go to Vegas to gamble, I always stay at one of Flamingo/Harrah's/Ballys. The daily resort fee sucks, but I can usually get three or four nights midweek comped. That equals to about $100 total for lodging, which still leaves more than enough in the budget for gambling. All of the major poker rooms are within walking distance, and contrary to popular belief, you can find 3-2 blackjack on the strip, you just have to do a little bit of looking around to find those tables.

when i was there a couple weeks ago, the wynn was playing around with only doing 2x odds vs 3-4-5 on dice unless you had $50 on the pass line. it will be a shame if this migrates down the strip like 6-5 blackjack.

Wait, so they're not paying 1.5X on blackjacks any longer? I haven't been to Vegas in a few years but I remember that only being on single card blackjack. That's how it is in Louisiana (Lauberge & Nugget) from what I've seen lately.

I can't stand old downtown because of all the smokers. When we went it was 20x worse than the strip.

I'm here for the first time and staying at the Bellagio.

I honestly don't get the appeal of this place.

I'm not a huge gambler but like to have something to do while my wife plays the slots . $25 minimums don't make for a long evening. Also, if you aren't gambling $17 a drink is a tough pill to swallow

I'm going to try downtown later on today and see if that is more my speed.

Either way, I think my first trip out here may end up being my last. There's just so many better options to travel for this kind of money

Video poker at a bar.

Put $50+ in immediately.

Comped drinks and an hour or two of fun.

Edit: you will like Fremont more. I went in a group of 5, and because we could seat and gamble a whole table basically, we had a little bartering power. Was able to change the $10 min to $5 right off the bat. Fremont area is way more relaxed.

I don't gamble, so Fremont was a lot more fun for me when it came to drinking. Drinks are about half as much as they are on the strip and things aren't 15 minute walks apart. I've never stayed there, but will probably try it out if I go back. My brother stayed at the Golden Nugget last year when we went there for his wedding, and the hotel seemed pretty nice. The pool sucked compared to the Mirage (where I was and spent 90% of my time), but the nightlife out the front door looked to be more of what I'd like.

And it may not be for you, but it's silly to say there is nothing you can do there that you can't do at a Choctaw casino.

I'm with you. We go for the food, and occasionally see some shows. If we stay at a nicer hotel, we usually walk down to a cheaper one to gamble. Our favorite gambling spots have been in a different casino each time we've gone. The restaurants are amazing and you can great food at any price point.

only thing vegas is good for is cheap flights and cheap rental cars to go to better places...Zion, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, etc.

Except the restaurants are a thousand times better, world class spas and shows you can't see anywhere else. Other than that, you're right.

Rather be in the mountains/nature. Sitting at a pool is boring, even with hot chicks around.

My favorite casino is the Westin behind The Flamingo and across the street from Bally's. It's smaller, cleaner, quieter, and less crowded than the Strip but close enough for good restaurants, shopping, etc. We played low-limit 3/2 Blackjack for a couple of hours while watching some NFL games on big screens above the tables. I couldn't ask for a better casino experience (other than winning more). I found it while waiting to rent a car to drive to Zion the last time I was in LV.

That's what I do the majority of the time, but with a $20.00 playing max credits. Word of advise, the nicer casinos are cracking down on this strategy. The Wynn/Encore does not comp video poker players at the bars. The Aria will only serve you one beer per half hour.

Was there this past weekend. Didn't need to park anywhere.

The uber from airport was a 7 series BMW. So that was nice.

Played video poker during ISU game. Was comped many drinks in that time at Cosmopolitan.

Saw a homeless drop her pants and pee on the street. That was special.
