Bill Byrne inherited two major problems when he became A.D. First, a crumbling infrastructure. Wally Groff kept his job with Ray Bowen on the condition that he kept the the Athletic Program in the black. He did this by deferred maintenance and cheap ticket prices. There were many Aggies who wanted to run with the big dogs in college sports but did not want to get off the financial porch! Bill drug them off and many Aggies were very bitter.
Bill was very aware of the anger over the higher ticket prices which is why, when he came to speak to the Dallas A&M Club, he explained why he was opposed to us going to the SEC. He explained the hundreds of millions of dollars that we would need to invest in our facilities to be competitive. With the many complaints over higher ticket prices, etc., he did not think we would be able or willing to do it. He never for saw Johnny Football and his impact on us. I promise you we would not have our new stadium and other facilities if it were not for him. It is truly the "House that Johnny built", even moreso than the "house that Doak built"! And no one could forsee the SEC Network and the many, many millions it would generate!
With all that being said Bill Byrne was the most effective and accomplished AD in A&M history. Eric would not make a pimple on his rear end!!
