Last time I was at The place at Howard Johnson was about 7 years ago with my family and it was not that good. We haven't been back because it was not memorable.
I know you said no chains, but the Stripes on 2818 is dang good.
Taquerias Y Restaurant El Sol De Mexico on the corner of MLK and Texas Ave. Their breakfast tacos are awesome! If you have a big appetite they will make it a burrito, loaded, huge! All with homemade tortillas.

Yes Texas chains are good I like Rudy's but finding that mom-and-pop place can be special

I agree, they are EXCELLENT and the staff is FABULOUS...
HOWEVER, THE .60 SERVICE CHARGE IS TOTAL BS!!!!!!

It's for "service". Can't charge a fee for processing a card in Texas unless you're a government entity.
I've never noticed that charge before.

Me neither. They got rid of that fee the last time I looked.
I always get the same thing at La Familia and I feel like the price is different every single time. Don't care, barbacoa is worth it.
For clarity's sake: La Familia is at Barron and 6, connected to the convenience store; Yole's La Familia is next to the convenience store in Wellborn; Mi Familia Coco Loco is next to the HoJo Express on 6, just before Rock Prairie.
