Actually a tough question but I will go with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Perhaps because I did not read the books until The Hobbit movies were being made, but I thought Jackson did fantastic work in bringing those stories to the big screen, unlike his work on The Hobbit.

Jaws is also a great choice. Jurassic Park the book is so much better than the movie, which in itself was great but I was frustrated with all the great stuff from the book that did not make it to the screen.

My first thought was Tom Clancy. I thought The Hunt For Red October was a good movie but it was an abortion of the awesome novel that Clancy wrote. Patriot Games was awful. Clear and Present Danger was a good movie but was not in the same league as the book - I never bought Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan and hated Willemstad Dafoe as Clark. The Sum of All Fears, possibly Clancy's best book about Muslim terrorists detonating a nuke at the Super Bowl, but in the name of politically correct cowardice, Hollywood gives us a movie about white Germans instigating war between the US and the USSR.

The Godfather is the answer to a question about adaptations that were better than the book.

Busty Schoolgirls Need Deep Lessons was pretty well adapted. The screenplay suffered due to some artistic dialog but otherwise it was fantastically done.

No country for old men was a fantastic adaption of Cormac McCarthy's novel.

Gotta agree with NCFOM. Most faithful adaption I've ever seen.

To Kill a Mockingbird really is the end of the thread.

BUT, I loved Stand By Me (adaption of the short story "The Body").

King's "Different Seasons" has the original work for Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil, and Stand By Me. Pretty amazing. Thought I'd mention it since others were already mentioning the novellas found within it.

First movie that came to my mind was "A Princess Bride".

The Shawshank Redemption. Hands down one of, if not the, greatest movies of all time.

I thought LOTR came as close to capturing the essence of a book as a movie possibly can.

Thinking about Red October, there weren't any significant stories or plots that were left out of the movie, were there? That was back when Clancy was writing reasonably lengthed books that could be reasonably converted into screenplays.

Silence of the Lambs.

An almost perfect movie that is pretty damn near 1:1 with the book.

If by left out you don't mean completely different, then I guess no. It's been awhile since I read the book but everything from about the mid point of the book onwards was completely different when it comes to the movie iirc. I read the book years later and reading the book just killed the movie for me.

In actuality, the best Clancy book made into a movie is Clear and Present Danger. Though the book delves deeper into Clark and Chavez than they do in the movie.

And I was going to say Clear and Present Danger for the thread. Ford as Ryan is better than Baldwin, Pine, and Affleck. Sum of all Fears was just a disappointment for the adaptation.
