The Metallica thread got me thinking, what are some of the more popular bands who have really changed their sound/style from their beginning albums to their later ones?

Some off the top of my head:
Metallica
Incubus
RHCP
Linkin Park
Green Day
Limp Bizkit
Muse?

Fall out boy.

Blink-182 last album sounds more like Angels and airwaves than original blink.

Just about any punk rock band once they get famous.

They were way more funk when they started. Perhaps not a huge change, but they are more radio friendly now.

Rush: in less than a decade, they went from "2112" to "Power Windows." Less than a decade after that, "Counterparts."

Biggest change ever......ministry
Went from "with sympathy " and touring as the opening act for the police

To stuff like "the land of rape and honey" almost overnight

Dang it, I wanted to give this thread-ending answer! The Beatles are arguably the earliest and best example. Personally, I prefer the pre-acid Beatles.

Another example of an artist who went from light tunes about girls to crazy heights of experimentation is David Bowie, who has reinvented himeslf countless times.

This is what I came here for. Listen to Pablo Honey, then listen to The King of Limbs. These dudes are so dynamic in what they can do.

I'm really nervous about Lucero's next album from what I have heard.

Incubus in a bad way. Not really a fan of anything in the last decade.

Linkin Park pretty much sounds the same to me (or at least the new song I heard on the radio - I haven't bought an album since their second one).

Absolutely. Not to mention their progression album by album. Each one is so different and amazing in their own way (minus Pablo Honey for the most part)

Pablo Honey -> The Bends -> OK Computer -> Kid A -> Amnesiac -> Hail to the Thief -> In Rainbows -> King of Limbs

My personal order:

OK Computer
In Rainbows
Kid A
Amnesiac
Hail to the Thief
King of Limbs
Pablo Honey

Startung with a big change from their days as the orginals to the new orginals and don't even get me started on the shift they made when they became the thamesmem.

But like a (iron) butterfly they emerged from their cocoon as spinal tap and became the gods that gave us one of the greatest collections of masterpieces in music history.

I second the Rush nomination. One could hear the transformation(s) during this last tour perfectly.

That order is the same for me. I actually really like a lot of Pablo Honey though. I'm not trying to get all Redstone, but i got Pablo Honey right after it came out, and as a young teenager just discovering his own music tastes, I LOVED that album, played it constantly. Radiohead really perfectly evolved right along the same trajectory of my changing tastes as I grew up.

Deftones.

Adrenaline was raw as ****. They still do the occasional raw song but a lot of their stuff has sounded softer, especially since white pony. Honestly, I like all of it.

And I know it's been said ad nauseum, but even if you don't care for the Beatles somehow, they went from Please Please Me to Let It Be in SEVEN YEARS. And in between released 5 of the best albums ever made, and a handful more classics. It's just astounding.
