Okay so I was six when this was premiered on tv. I'd always heard it was worth checking out but had been reluctant due to its length.

Finally started it up on Netflix on saturday. Watched all 4 episodes in a sitting. I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to watch.

Absolutely beautiful. Some of the best dialogue I've ever come across.

Much like Band of Brothers, LD has rewatchability.

Would definitely recommend if you have put it off like I had.

Call and the army scout and Gus whacking a surly bartender alone make it worth re-watching

I hate rude behavior in a man. I won't tolerate it.

This. I've actually read the book and the two prequels in the series twice now. In fact I would almost put Comanche moon up there with Lonesome Dove. Fantastic books. Now, Streets of Laredo on the other hand, I've never been able to make it through. It just didn't seem to fit with the others

"I'd like to see the herd that you & Jake could gather. A herd of wh*res......maybe."

Lonesome Dove may be the greatest thing I've ever seen on TV.

It's "I God" not "By god"

Gus is arguably the best male character ever. We should all strive to be as manly as Gus.

Agreed.

When we were compiling boy names for our sons, my wife vetoed:

Gus
Augustus
Newt
Soupy
Lippy
Pea Eye

She just doesn't get it.

So your boys are named Woodrow, Deets & Jasper I'm guessing. Nice Job!

wife an i agreed on James Newton and Augustus Mark. the grand mothers where not impressed with having a newt and gus as grand sons. Grand dads keep their mouths shut, so don't know their true opinion. i would like to think they approved.

I don't know if I can think of an actress whom I had a bigger crush on as a kid. Possibly Brooke Shields in the early 80's.

Totally understandable. Jasper seldom conducted himself in a manner suitable to naming one's offspring after him. It does however, seem like a name you might be able to slip by......uh, I mean talk the wife into as opposed to Lippy, Soupy, Newt, Xaviar, Big Zwey, Monkey John or Frog Lip.

This and then read "Charles Goodnight. Cowman and Plainsman."

Call's character is based on Charles Goodnight and Gus is based on Oliver Loving. Goodnight brought Loving's body back from New Mexico after he was shot in the wrist by Comanches on the Goodnight-Loving trail. It became infected and he asked Goodnight to bring him back to Texas.

Bonus: Deets is based on a real black Cowboy named Bose Ikard and you can see the inscription Call wrote on Deets' grave on Ikard's grave in Weatherford.

This is what Goodnight wrote on Ikard's grave:

"Bose Ikard (18591928)
with me four years on the Goodnight-Loving Trail, never shirked duty or disobeyed an order, rode with me in many stampedes, participated in three engagements with Comanches, splendid behavior."
