Gambo sat chained to his chair across from his lawyer. Jeff01 was sitting back from the table with his briefcase in his lap.
“So look… I never met with this CDUB guy in Dallas. I don’t know what the hell he’s talking about. That’s gotta be worth something, right?”
“But you were in Dallas that night?”
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
Gambo chuckled and shook his head. “Seeing a woman. We were supposed to have a special night that night. Her idea. Beech.”
“Brew?”
“No, you idiot she was there with Stoney. Somebody else I had been seeing on the side, okay? Don’t look so shocked.”
“Who was it?”
“Nobody,” said Gambo, rubbing his face. “A whoor from the Rose. She never even showed up. Her car broke down on the way in. But who cares? What the hell are you gonna do?”
Jeff had his feet pushed together and slowly pushed his chair a little further from the table. “Actually, Gambo, I came here to tell you that since I also represented Stoney, I can’t be involved in this case.”
“WHAT?!” screamed Gambo, standing and nearly falling over when his chains pulled taut. Jeff01 jumped backwards out of his chair and toward the door.
“The county will assign you a new lawyer, or you can hire your own,” he said, turning the knob. “Good luck, Gambo,” he said as he hurried out the door. He couldn’t walk fast enough to outrun the stream of curses that followed him down the hallway.
