Many suggestions in this thread are not 'riffs'. A riff is a group of repeated, short, individually played guitar notes with or without a chord(s) to compliment it. (Think enter sandman main repeated guitar part)

A song can have multiple riffs. A guitar solo itself is typically not a riff, though it can contain a riff within it and one may confuse a solo for a riff. Again, if it's a repeated segment, it's going to be called a riff.

The end of sweet home Alabama, that's a solo. The beginning? A riff.

If there are no individual notes, it's tonight to classify it as a riff. Like sublime's what I got. That is borderline, because if you listen close there are individuals notes within that D/G combo that differentiates it from a simple D/G strum.

Same with green days time of your life. It's G/C/D but with distinct individual notes within the chord.

Eruption is a guitar solo.

Thank you for the response and emoji face oh wise music one. Sure sounds like muted strings between notes on the studio version and considering Jeff Beck wrote it it isn't wild to think it's a guitar. Sounds pretty damn good when played on a guitar as well.

Saw him in concert years ago at the little studio venue across from Bass Hall in Ft Worth and was amazed at how skilled his. He is hands down one of the best guitarists I have seen live
