Guitar riffs are not chord progressions.
They are single note "hooks" that may or may use chords.

Can't really think of one. Maybe Gold on the ceiling or something from the Black Keys. Other than that, I wholeheartedly agree. Rock/alt rock is pretty much dead. You got indie rock or pop nowadays.

I think you're right, the guitar riff seems to have died out. There was a last ditch effort from guys like The Killers and Muse, but that was nearly 10 years ago now

Not sure if the riff died out or if the possibilities have all been used. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse is a pretty good riff but not super original. Jack Johnson has a ton of good riffs. Rappers too: Trick Daddy, Dre, Outkast.
