Matt Reeves, who wrote and directed the last two Apes movies, which I thought were incredible, has moved onto The Batman franchise, and will be sorely missed, but this latest entry looks great nonetheless. If anything, it seems to be a true bridge between the first three prequels and the original movie. Though, if this one is successful I'm sure there will be more, leading up to the events of the original. And then I could even see them outright remaking the original (again) in some form or fashion. Until then, here's the synopsis, trailer, and poster for the latest entry...

Yeah, that one was the most recent. 2017. War for the Planet of the Apes. It concluded the Caesar trilogy, and now this one is set a number of years later, with all new characters.

One monkey saying 1 word and 1 sentence does not strongly convey that the entire population of multiple species will then learn the same language over time.

I'm holding out for this prequel/sequel/reboot:



But seriously that trailer didn't look particularly awe inspiring. The dialogue was pretty generic and vague, and didn't really differentiate itself from any of the other Ape movies.

Aside from all that, I'm not sure we need another trilogy of heavy-handed allegorical themes, not limited to - but containing - class struggles, rebellion, racism and discrimination.

On the other hand, maybe this movie won't use cringey oppression motifs and instead tell a good story with the good kind of thought-provoking characters.

This next trilogy takes place between the two franchise eras (omitting the 2001 Tim Burton/Mark Wahlberg remake)...

2011 - Rise of the Planet of the Apes
2014 - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
2017 - War for the Planet of the Apes

2024 - Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
20?? - [X] of the Planet of the Apes
20?? - [X] of the Planet of the Apes

1968 - Planet of the Apes
1970 - Beneath the Planet of the Apes
1971 - Escape from the Planet of the Apes
1972 - Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
1973 - Battle for the Planet of the Apes

... so do with that information what you will.

As noted earlier, next year's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes takes place 300 years after 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes. That said, we have no idea how long before 1968's Planet of the Apes 2024's Kingdom takes place. There's also, of course, the possibility that Kingdom could be leading up to a complete re-imagining/remake of 1968's Planet of the Apes. So less of a bridge between the two eras and more charting a new course.

The CGI effort... lazy.

The first generation of POTA (68-73) is the best, while the latter years found the story line and acting sucking.

McDowell and Hunter ruled.

You can have your computerized POTA. I'll take the analog any day. The trailer for the "new" film I found underwhelming. The Wahlberg effort was nice.
