I had no idea the observation blisters on the PBY Catalina are this big.

Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022

Also at SLC Intl. I had Aircraft Movement Area/AOA access at the time due to my job. About 2013-2014 IIRC.

Cool. I was in that squadron in that timeframe but never flew one to SLC

The city operated three airports at the time: International, South Valley (General Aviation) and Tooele Valley (General Aviation). There was a National Guard attack helicopter battalion (Apache) based at South Valley and occasionally, when I got down there for inspections I would see other fixed wing military aircraft. Wasn't unusual to see Canadian or European a/c at all.

I thought I had posted this before, but I can't find it here. MFP in October 2021, Amarillo. Kind of shaky video, but if you skip to about the 4:00 mark, unrestricted climb out, followed by some nice stills. Pilot is a Zoomie, but her Mom, Dad, brother, granddad, and about 8 other close relatives are Aggies.

You did, I remember it. Don't think it was on the GB, though, maybe OB or History. Still an awesome video and I don't mind seeing it twice!

I think you are correct, posted elsewhere, first time on this thread. Maybe I was afraid of the GB

As one should be.

Please pass my gratitude on to your favorite pilot for her service (and envy, I can only imagine the adrenaline rush that thing delivers).

Your daughter flies an air vehicle that I was a lead structures engineer on (assuming that's a Block 40).

STOVL has a shorter canopy. CTOL and CV use a common canopy, but this is a CV. Hard to see the bigger wing in this pic.

EDIT: I really need to use the A/B/C designators - we just used CTOL/STOVL/CV for so long, it's hard to break the habit. I still use JSF instead of F-35 too.

I know what the acronyms mean, have no clue how A, B or C corresponds to those types, so I rather you stick to them.

A is the conventional/AF model. B is the STOVL/Marine version. C is the CATOBAR/Navy version

And what's funny is we designed them B (STOVL), then A (CTOL) then C (CV).

There was AA-1, which was just a flight demonstrator one off, which we did first. We ended up using it as a battle damage assessment test article, so it's been shot all to hell.

I see that now that I zoom on it. Missed that.

I think it's fascinating how the addition of the B version basically instantaneously became a force multiplier, and exponentially increased the lethality of what was basically just a group of ampibious insert ships. It's like all those LHD's are now literally like baby aircraft carriers. They used to be able to leverage just ground power, but now it's significant air power. They can do things, a LOT of things, that we used to have a full blown aircraft carrier to achieve.

F-35's are more capable than harriers but we've had harriers on those LHA/LHD's for decades. They still face the same drawbacks without aerial refueling or AEW and having to share the deck with helos
