Johnny Manziel releases statement about rehab stay

Cleveland Browns QB and A&M legend Johnny Manziel voluntarily entered a treatment facility on January 28 and was released on April 11, in advance of the Browns offseason workout program which begins on April 20.

Word on Manziel's status was hard to come by during his stay, but in a statement released Friday morning on the Browns website the former Heisman Trophy winner delares his intent to earn back trust he's lost and place his full focus on football.

The full statement:

"I would like to thank my family, friends, the Browns organization, my teammates, and Browns fans everywhere, for your patience, understanding, and support during my stay at Caron. The doctors and staff have been amazing and what I’ve learned in the last couple of months has been tremendous.

"I owe private apologies to a lot of people that I disappointed but a very public one to the Browns organization and the fans that I let down. I take full responsibility for my actions and it’s my intention to work very hard to regain everyone’s trust and respect. I understand that will take time and will only happen through what I do and not what I say.

"I also understand there’s a lot of curiosity about this but anyone who has a friend or family-member that’s been through things like this knows it’s an ongoing process. I’m going to continue to ask folks to try to respect my privacy as I determine to what degree I am comfortable talking about a subject which I consider very personal. Most of you have been considerate about that and I thank you for it.

"I look forward to seeing my teammates next week and focusing on football and my desire to be the best possible player, teammate, and man that I can be.”

What I really meant to say is that he doesn't need to make any statement. Unless he commits some heinous crime, my opinion of him will not change. From afar, I see him as a genuine person, good teammate, and great college football player.

okay, but not really the point, imo. I'm sure HE felt he needed to do it or he wouldn't have. It's about what he needs to do to go in the direction he wants, not what we think he needs or doesn't need.

We're all pulling for him, however.

In his statement, he should've mentioned he needed an Offensive Line from the Browns Organization for him to be the Best Player he can be..

I can only assume why he was "unavailable" for almost 75 days and that assumption is not my business.

However, I will say this: as far as we all know, he didn't beat up a girlfriend or wife; he wasn't drug trafficking;
he didn't murder anybody; he didn't rape anybody; he didn't shoot somebody or attempt to kill somebody; he didn't create any children out of wedlock and he didn't steel food, clothing or lotions from a grocery store.

Give the guy some slack; he owned up to his mistakes (whatever they were) and sought help. That's more than I can say about a tremendous amount of college & professional athletes a number of which fit the bill in the instances referenced above.

In all honesty, the Browns are responsible for making their team work. Johnny might or might not have done what he should have (I'm not in a position to either comment nor even care), but the franchise is a dumpster fire and Johnny really believed that his presence by itself was enough to make up for that. Clearly Johnny was wrong.

Johnny now knows it isn't true. He might be serious about what it takes. He might manage himself better and attend to the symbolism that wins back the fans and even the franchise itself. But the chance that the current Cleveland Browns franchise is going to stop being a dumpster fire anytime soon given the ham-handedness of the current ownership? Zero. And right now the focus on Johnny makes it look like it's his fault it's a dumpster fire. BS.

Now that might be perceived as enabling Johnny. Again, I don't care. Riffing on Billy Joel, he didn't start the fire.

OK, let me reword. Johnny doesn't need to make any statement (or apologize) TO ME. I don't know him on a personal level. I am not a person of significant.

What has Manziel done over the past few years that is so disappointing? What did he do to you or someone close to you where he needs to make a statement and apologize?

Who said anything about the "past few years"

I'm talking about his rookie year in the NFL.

Also, the fact you had to even ask that question tells me you weren't paying much attention last year.

quote:
Johnny doesn't need to make any statement (or apologize) TO ME
To you? Of course he doesn't, nothing. Not a damn thing. What an odd thing to think and say. never was about that. Again, he felt he needed to make it to his team, his family and himself. I don't think he was living up to the version of himself he wanted to be. Hence, the apology. Better to take yourself out of the equation all together. It's not about us.

You keep comparing it to murder or the like no one is talking about that, I'm talking about his preparedness and seemingly carefree/party like attitude. I can't help you if you can't understand how Johnny came across last year to some and in some ways. If you disagree, fine, but Johnny had a rough year, a bad year of perception of his willingness and work ethic and quite frankly pissed off several in his organization who saw him as a spoiled brat who was overrated. And before anyone says the Browns suck, that doesn't matter. It's who he plays for and his team and management. He came across unprofessional.

He made a statement in NOVEMBER of last year that he needed to get "serious" about things now. Really? then? gee, good call. Then not long after that, when he got hurt, he doesn't show up for training. you may think that's no big deal, but it is. you don't just not show up for that, especially when you seemingly "overslept" and/or "partied too late" Once again, we heard, "I'm going to change and my actions will show it"

He pissed off his teammates for his seemingly lack of preparation and caring.

He was a rookie for god's sake and still kept appearing to sluff some of the rules. that showed immaturity.

All the while his play was pretty atrocious with few bright spots and while there are plenty of examples of current and former greats having bad rookie seasons, Johnny had the other baggage as well. Unfair? Sure. but reality.

What he did wasn't horrible in the scheme of life, and for some reason that seems to be your measuring stick. but it was unprofessional. He knows it, The Browns know it and most of the NFL knows it. Why you don't is beyond me. That's why he said the things he did. He's heard the disappointment and the innuendo and the other comments made about him. He's listening and growing up. To act as if everything went well last year and was oky doky would not make him fair well.

Johnny felt as if he needed to apologize, some will never think he does for anything, ever. And fine if that's how you feel. I'm ready for him to grow up a bit, personally. And I think he will and I believe he wants too. Time will tell. His statement is a great start to a new season. Put it behind him and move on.

I'm excited for the guy and hope this time he truly backs up his word, because after a while it's just crying wolf. If Johnny wants to stay in the NFL, if YOU and others want to see him continue to play and be the guy we all know he can be and match his talent with his person, he has to change his approach and it sounds like this time he will. If he doesn't, he'll be another has been. No one who pulls for Johnny wants that. I believe he has the talent. At 22 he is young, but hopefully he's grown up a lot in the past few months. he took steps for the rehab, which HE felt he needed, whether some think he did or not. I actually think they just expect him to go back to partying his ass off, being "Johnny" and kicking ass on the field. Johnny has realized that ain't gonna fly (I hope) I think he will be a much happier guy now and that will probably translate onto the field.

For those that always defend him no matter what and compare it to other bad things, I can't help you. I love Johnny, loved seeing him play and will continue too, but he's human and he made some mistakes., just like we all do and sadly his were on the world stage, most of us don't have that added pressure.. He didn't do anything criminal, but that's not the point.

I think some see him as indestructible and the baller who can party, roll into work and play like a pro. Well, he can't. NO one can and still compete in this day and age. He's figured that out (hopefully), realizes he needs to refocus and grow up. It's really that simple.

Go Johnny Go.
