No. 22 Aggie Softball takes down Houston 6-3
The Texas A&M softball team hosted the Houston Cougars yesterday at the Aggie Softball Complex. Senior Rachel Fox and the Aggies put up a fight against the Cougars and ultimately took the 6-3 win, improving to 13-4 this season.
After a scoreless first inning, Ashley Walters led things off, making it on base due to an error at third base. Kristen Cuyos followed behind for a double down the left field line. Reagan Boenker came out swinging on the first pitch and hit a bomb over center field sending both runners home, giving the Aggies a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars attempted to pounce back in the third with a run off an error made by the Ags.
The Aggies kept the fight going in the fourth loading the bases not once, but twice. Cuyos led things off on a fly ball to center, which was caught for the first out, followed by Boenker who struck out for the second out. Abby Donnell stepped up getting a double off a left center hit toward the fence. With one runner on Brittany Clopton hit a grounder making it to first, following behind Alex Masek who with struggle from the pitcher made it to first on a grounder.
A walk on a full count by freshman Tori Vidales sent Donnell home for the fourth run. With bases loaded again, Cali Lanphear hit a double helping both runners’ advances, taking the lead with a 6-1 score.
In the top of the fifth the Cougars made things interesting when a run was scored on a RBI double. The Aggies didn’t have luck scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning, but that didn’t stop the Aggie defense from overcoming the Cougars in the seventh only letting two runs by, ending in a final of 6-3 and the Aggies taking the win.
