Quote:

But in 1964, a writer told Giants manager Alvin Dark that Perry, then 24, was a good hitting pitcher, and might hit a home run someday. Dark responded, saying, "Mark my words, a man will land on the moon before Gaylord Perry hits a home run.''

Five years later, at 1:17 p.m. Pacific time on July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to set foot on the moon. Thirty minutes later, roughly 238,900 miles away, in the third inning at Candlestick Park, Perry hit his first major league homer, a blast off the Dodgers' Claude Osteen.

Did you read the second comment where the relief pitcher coming in injured himself in warmups and they had to go to a 3rd pitcher.

Going from bad to worse super quick.

Multiple articles from ESPN and MLB.com about it. The attribution was a then Giants out here who heard the comment from the manager. Perry definitely hit his first major league HR the same day as the moon landing, shortly after Apollo 11 touched down. Only real question is whether the manager made the comment.

I've never heard of someone injuring themselves during the warm up pitches. That's crazy

Surely the writer mentioned the comment in his column sometime in the intervening five years.

It's only cheating if you get caught. Not like Florida has the moral high ground anyway.

BTW the Gaylord Perry autobiography "Me and the Spitter" was a great and hilarious read.

(and the book had that same moon story)

Back in those days they quit letting pitchers lick their fingers - watch how many do it now.

Perry got so good at it that he said he just needed a little trickle of sweat to get the ball to dance.

And the Tennessee fans are going nuts on X over this comparing it to the missing-bat-sticker-call.

Love SEC ball.

Interesting timing of the injury - what are the chances he was using the sticky stuff too and realized the umps would likely check him pretty closely?

I wasn't watching the game, but it would be interesting to find a replay and watch for names of who was warming up and how quickly they are available this week.

Larry Yount, the older brother of HoFer Robin Yount, was injured warming for a relief appearance in what would have MLB debut in a 4-2 Astros loss to the Braves in September '71. He never make it back to the Show. Since he officially brought into the game and warming up on the field he is credited with an appearance in a game but never threw a pitch.

How lazy are you to put it on your arm? Behind your ear, inside your belt, between the fingers of your glove... But your arm!??
