ARLINGTON - Before each game, Longhorns coach Charlie Strong selects two senior
captains to represent Texas at the coin toss. Defensive tackle Desmond
Jackson received the honor Saturday against UCLA along with running back
Malcolm Brown.
It'll likely be their last time. UCLA won the toss and chose to defer its choice to the second half. Instead of taking
the no-brainer receiving the ball to start the game Jackson opted for
Texas to kick off.
Asked by the head official if he was sure, Jackson insisted. With that, UCLA received the ball to begin both halves
an extreme rarity in football.
To no avail, an irate Strong pleaded with the officiating crew to dismiss Jackson's wishes and let
Texas receive to start the night. Luckily for Jackson and Brown, the
Longhorns forced UCLA to punt on the opening drive.
Jackson hurt: Jackson's night got worse in the third quarter when he injured his right leg and
needed help off the field. Jackson was taken to the locker room on a
motorized cart.
