In the quiet neighborhood between Mockingbird and University sits a brick oven ready and willing to overcook our grits Saturday.

SMU was once a thriving program with All-Americans and morals. And then they died. Or were murdered. Or were executed. Anyway, they were dead and gone.

And then a heartbeat...a twitch...and their rise from the beyond was complete. Yes, SMU is a zombie. Here is file footage of an innocent cadet trying to fend off the flesh eating Methodist mustangs.



For 20+ years they have roamed the smaller conferences biting and scratching any team unwise enough to play them.

Their head coach quit them. They have no guidance. They have no heart. They have no fear.

SMU's male cheerleaders used to throw their bodies onto to the field to spell out the letters S M and U after touchdowns. They did this, apparently, even after being told they were not allowed on Kyle Field during the game. Mr. Hood, as you can see, took his OD responsibilities a little too seriously.

Actually as an eye witness, my observation was that Mr. Hood was yelling and prodding the cheerleaders off the field with his hand on the hilt of the sword. One of the cheerleaders knelt behind him and another pushed him over. As he fell backwards the sword came out. Of course then not knowing what to do he brandished it. Personally we should have kicked the living snot out of those cheerleaders. But whatever. Hood was kicked out of school if I recall correctly and Johnny Carson even made fun of the incident on the Tonight Show. After this, the whole tradition of protecting the field and limiting access ended. Not that I care. But it was good bull back then.

You must not have been there at the tu game in '95. When the sips charged the field after the game, so did the CTs. It was pretty much a riot.
