COLLEGE STATION At plenty of other positions at Texas A&M, where third-year coach Kevin Sumlin is still trying to build depth almost across the board, the talented Koda Martin would have been pressed into action from the start. But at offensive line, one of the team's (and nation's) strengths, it appears Sumlin will have the opportunity to redshirt Martin, who tabbed the Aggies over Alabama, Texas, Florida State, LSU and Stanford, among other renowned programs.Sumlin was asked a question by a gentleman named Dee, A&M class of 1968, on Sumlin's radio show this week, on "who has flown under the radar (among the youngsters), and is a star-in-the-making that we haven't heard about?"In other words, fans have heard of defensive end Myles Garrett and receiver Speedy Noil. But who else is making an early impression on the coaches?"(Receiver) Jamal Jeffery is a young guy from Lufkin who you saw come in and catch the ball," Sumlin said of Jeffery's two receptions. "We talked about redshirting him, but he's done a lot of things for us."Jeffery, who's 5 foot 9 and 175 pounds, was a consensus three-star prospect who chose the Aggies over Texas Tech, Missouri and Oklahoma State."Most of our young guys have played, that's been well-documented," Sumlin continued. "We've played 14 freshmen in the last two weeks. We don't redshirt a whole lot of guys there's not a whole other practice going on another field, where I'm saying, 'He's going to be good.' Because if a guy is 'going to be good,' I'm usually already playing him in games."Then Sumlin got to Martin, who's a stark exception to that rule three games into the season (but could always be pressed into action should an injury or injuries occur)."The guy who's probably going to have the biggest impact as the next great future offensive lineman is a kid named Koda Martin," Sumlin said on his show, hosted by Dave South. "It came down to him and Alabama. His dad (Kirk Martin) is the Manvel coach, and at Manvel, Koda was a tight end/offensive lineman, and he came in here about 255 pounds. When we recruited him he was probably about 245-250 pounds. He's 6 foot 6 with a similar body type to Cedric Ogbuehi."Last week Koda weighed 285. He's athletic with long arms and he's active he's just going to be a really good player. We have the ability right now to redshirt him, and if things go the right way, he won't be here very long after that (chuckle)."He's athletic all he needed was (weight) and strength, and coach (Larry) Jackson in our strength and conditioning program, and our nutritionist, are working with him more than we're working with him on the football field right now. Koda Martin that's a name to remember."twitter.com/brentzwerneman
