I don't recall ever hearing Rome say anything offensive about the bonfire tragedy. I heard him comment once on the student movement to reinstate bonfire, and what he said, essentially, was that the students need to give it a rest because the reason the accident happened in the first place was that the whole thing was poorly planned and poorly executed by the students. That's not being offensive, it's just telling it how he saw it and how everyone else in the world saw it.

We all realize that the bonfire collapse will always be a tragic thing in the history of A&M. But it happened 8 years ago. At some point, you have to stop thinking that every comment someone makes about it is intended to be disrespectful or inflammatory. People still make tower jokes all the time, and members of the UT community stopped getting bent out of shape about it a long time ago. It's always childish and never funny, but it's also almost never meant to blatantly trample on the memory of anyone who was killed.

The first two sentences from his website bio:

quote:
Perhaps the most respected voice in the world of sports broadcasting, Jim Rome is the leading opinion-maker of his generation. As host of the nation’s premiere sports radio talk show, Rome is known for his aggressive, informed, rapid-fire dialogue.

At least he loves himself. What a tool.

True WimberleyAg, and the others who listen to them just do it to feed their spite.

As for this guy, he's just trying to make a buck, and so he'll pander to whoever will give him rating; sort of like Ann Coulter.

Jim's show is just that a show, and his act is just that an act. He has made a very fine living doing it. I've known Jim almost from the very beginning of his radio show which was a weekend only show at the time done from a very small studio for 1 radio station. He succeeded because people like his show. In the days before blogging was so popular and sites like this were so plentiful his show gave people a place to rant - much like Texags does. He has nothing personally against A&M.

Props to him for building himself a successful show but he is kinda like the howard stern of sports. He just says stuff to try to piss off/shock people

Does Rome having Acie on the show last year and Gillespie during the NCAA tournament qualify as always bashing A&M? He only ranted how clutch Acie was last year and remarkable job Gillespie had done.

I listen to him when I know he has good guests. I'm not saying I'm a big Rome fan, but to say he is always negative about A&M is completely false.

Rome bags on whatever is the easiest subject to rip on at the time. He's said good things about A&M too, as well as Acie Law.

The guy makes fun of the things that are easy targets and kisses the butts of his interviews, but what show is any different? The guy is obviously a persona/character. It's all an act. If you don't like his act, that's fine, but it's not like he has a personal vendetta against A&M.

This has got to be the most beaten-dead topic on Texags.

That email is not real. I first saw it my freshman year at A&M (2001). I understand that it had been around for quite some time before that too.

Rome rarely mentions the Aggies, but when he does he is generally neutral. He had Acie Law IV and BCG/TKC on last year and was great to both of them.

I listen to Rome whenever I get the chance.

My recollection is that the email is NOT Fake. It was a real email sent to Jim Rome by a fan of some other school (take your guess as to which one). Jim read it (or parts of it) on the air as part of a segment he used to have called something like "Big Email of the Day" (or something like that).

If I recall correctly, that other fan sent the email as "retaliation" after an A&M basketball win (I think it was a road game in Louisiana or Alabama.) and the fan was angry about losing a bet, a big one.

Later, someone tacked on that those were Jim's comments when they were not. It's been making the rounds since then. It would be interesting to get the folks at snopes.com to investigate and put this story to rest once and for all.

I don't listen to Jim Rome any longer because he's so repetitive that it hurts my head.

I think his show is appealing and popular *because* he's so repetitive -- he appeals to the masses because, generally speaking, the masses are dumb.

But, I will say that his on-air interviews are usually pretty decent.

So what did he say that was so offensive? Several people have made this claim, but nobody will come out with whatever it was he said that was so wrong.

This is all in the point of view. There was a time, right after the accident happened, that if a non-Aggie even uttered the word "bonfire," an Aggie was going to take immediate offense.

A friend of mine (who is not a Texas graduate or a Texas fan or even a Texas resident) made the comment a few years ago that he didn't understand the "tradition" of setting a pile of logs on fire, and an Aggie who happened to overhear the conversation went absolutely ape-**** and accused him of trampling on people's graves. The guy never said a word about the collapse, never made fun of people dying, nothing of the sort. Not being from Texas, he didn't even really know the details of the collapse. He was, in a roundabout way, asking ME a question about why bonfire was/is such a big deal to Aggies. And it was immediately assumed that he was intentionally being offensive.

So all I'm asking is, what did Jim Rome say that was so terrible?

I have to admit that was prime rome material and it is kinda funny.

When I was in the corp we had too many rednecks who really did not care if they graduated or had good grades. They were all about being in the corp, going to football games, ragging on fish, being rednecks, and extending their teenage years.

Now we did have some pretty sharp guys but the idiots mentioned above made it hard want to stay in the corp.

I think it may be time to change some traditions.

1. I believe we do have an inferiority complex about tu.

2. The corp should be only for those who intend to make the military a career not a military style frat.

3. It would be nice to have female cheerleaders - ok start your yelling now.

Rome is the only media guy that players and coaches respect arguably.

Puts on a great show. Great interviews. you may not like him but he is hilarious and right on most of the time.

He gave us nothing but run last year in basketball. He has ripped Fran the last 5 years just like what we do on texags.

Dude knows how to deal and there is a reason athletes love him.

only texags will root on louie and bash rome. Torbush Wow!
