Seems like Jenkins had a Chevy dealership back then. Perhaps it was the one in Hearne, though, that is now Derek Scott. Before my time, I'm afraid.

Corbusier Chevrolet. It was located on Texas Ave just South of 29th St. I was born and grew up in Bryan and remember it in the 50s (Dad worked for GMAC and I spent time with him going to dealers).

There was a Pontiac dealer in the north end of downtown Bryan on Bryan street, too. I remember going down there at night riding in the car when I was a kid because it had neon sign of a Pontiac Indian above the door.

I remember going to Lou Hertenberger's GM dealership in Navasota and there was an Olds dealer in Hearne (Allen Olds?)

There was a gas station (Sinclair?) on the corner of Texas and 30th and the dealership was across the street on the west side of Texas Ave. Search the following link. It shows a photo of the dealership and says it is now the site of Andy's Auto repair. http://www.agilitynut.com/gas/txsinclair2.html

I think Andy's Auto Repair was the old Sinclair Gas Station. It even states this on the website you linked.

Was this the Chevrolet Showroom? I got this pic from the same website.

Allen owned the Olds, Cadillac, Buick dealership before selling to Sterling Auto Group. His son kept the Honda dealership they opened back in the day.

Yes. My grandmother grew up on that block, before it was Corbusier Chevrolet.

I think you're right. As I recall, it later became a Phillips 66. It was owned by Andy Sustaita.

I don't think so. If it was, it was long before my time.

Yes. This was at the corner of Texas Avenue and Twin Blvd., across from what was then Holiday Inn and Baskin-Robbins. I think he also had the lots where Sterling was (30th?) before Sterling moved to the bypass.

Actually I think Buick etc was Brown-Allen Motor company first, then CJ Allen took it over. The Corbusier I remember was across the street from Der Weiner*****zel. And yes Marlon Jentsch who had a car store in Hearne was here for awhile.

This is a GREAT thread. Although that link further up that had pictures and information about old gas stations and art deco spots...well, that killed a couple of hours of my day this morning! What a really interesting link.

Local history is often passed by stories between generations, and so details and interesting information like stores often gets lost. Even though those stores were central points of interest in the community.

Case in point, take a look at the communal stir in regards to the development at 40 and SH6.

Andy's was Bama Smith's Phillips 66 station. The building where Vilas is was the old Firestone store. Brown Allen was the old Olds-Cadillac dealer downtown. Dishman was the Pontiac-Buick dealer located around Parker and 26th street.

We had some good local history discussion in this thread: http://mybcs.com/content/forums/Replies.aspx?tid=1997020

I mentioned a book on there called Historic Brazos County An Illustrated History by Robert Borden. Here's the link: http://books.google.com/books?id=SDfsHUwjbOcC&pg=PA33&lpg=PA33&dq

Yes. My grandmother grew up on that block, before it was Corbusier Chevrolet.

Actually the corner of Texas and 29th was the location of my Family's Gas station and Automotive repair shop for over forty years. The station on the corner was built in the 40's and was Barnes Conoco for years and then Billy Francis sold tires out of is in the latter years until it was closed down. Right hext to the station was Barnes Garage and Auto Center, that building was built in the 60's and was there as well until the City Bought out the entire property from my Uncle Robert Barnes. Seems there was a Midas Muffler just to the south of it for some time and the Corbusier Chevrolet/Tom Light Dealer was next to it. The Muffler shop was forever coming over to borrow tools or something. When Corbusier got a vehicle in that they couldn't diagnose, they'd call my grandfather or uncle to come over to take a look at it. My Grandfather also had a Texaco Station down in College station by the university for years until the big shop was built there in the 60's then he moved up to there with my uncle and the Texaco was torn down for student housing expansion.

If you are a member of facebook and interested in the BCS past, you might enjoy this group:

I am having trouble getting the link to work but you can go on your facebook page and enter "You Know You From Bryan/College Station When" in the FB search for people, places and things and that should work.

Barnes had a reputation as an honest mechanic. We used him until he closed shop for good.

Robert still is an honest mechanic. He wouldn't do business any other way. We tore down the shop and resurrected it by his house out on Dilly Shaw Tap Rd. Looks the same as it has since it was first built. The years have caught up with him, but he's still the best mechanic I've ever seen. When I get stumped on something I can always call on him. Still wears his flat top hair cut, and always good for a laugh every day.
