Tell me about the Johnson Smoker....do you have the "Ultimate Patio"? How is it with wood consumption? Im kind of lightly reading and reasearching and Im reading that RF Smokers like this consume more fuel than ..... I guess regular offsets. Is that true on that unit? It doesnt really matter, I have an endless supply of pecan, but im still curious.

What model johnson smoker do you have? I've been looking really hard at them. Pretty much decided on them as the maker, but I'm having trouble deciding which model.
Sorry I didn't respond to the earlier question, I never checked back on this thread. I have the 24" T-Pit, so it isn't the traditional looking reverse flow pit. It is (kind of) this guys design and in my opinion a pretty good one.
Basically the big difference is it has the firebox on the bottom/underneath cooking chamber rather than offset to the side. There are 2 metal plates that join in the middle that send the smoke to the sides and then out the stacks. This helps have a much more consistent temperature throughout the pit and avoids hot spots you get in offsets. It also makes it more efficient than most traditional reverse flows...so its kind of best of both.
This is still a stick burner. You aren't buying a glorified oven like a Pitmaker or other vault style pits. However, it is pretty dang efficient given that its on the larger side of backyard pits. Once I get that thing to temperature it sticks pretty well and takes about a log an hour.
I got to see alot of his pits when I went to pick mine up over 2 years ago and he does really good work. The welds are done great and it holds heat and smoke great. Let me know if you have questions and I'll try to post some pics of my pit soon.
