I would say that it is very possible to be an agnostic theist Christian. I have been before. I was in the "more likely than not" camp for quite a while.

I agree. To me, agnostic theist Christian strikes me as a bit unstable only because I understand Christianity to be a religion that acknowledges doubt and skepticism, but does not really encourage those positions as a permanent stance. I think most Christians would agree that doubt is inevitable and very human, but it seems to me that Christianity calls you to disregard that doubt or get beyond it . . . . to know (in a more gnostic sense).

Anyway, thoughts from the outside, feel free to correct the above as you see fit.

Elaborate on that.

I understand the context the verse appears in, I'm looking for an explanation of it as a theological position or prayer.

Not to steal K2's thunder, but it is the basis of my favorite prayer that I read aloud quite often.

quote:
Lord Jesus, I believe. Help my unbelief! Strengthen my weak and flickering faith. I know that You are my wisdom, my righteousness, my sanctification, and my redemption. Lord, strengthen this faith in me, that I may never fear nor faint in any trial or temptation. You alone are the Author and Finisher of my faith. Though my faith be tried with fire, may I ever be found strong and unmovable to the glory of Your holy name. Let me firmly trust in Your blood, which cleanses me from all sin, that though my sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. When I am enticed by sin and the world beckons and my own passions want to yield, help my unbelief, and give me the strength and will to resist. When trials, sorrow, and affliction want to rob me of this trust, O Lord, help me to remain steadfast and true. Strengthen my faith in Your promise that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are called according to Your purpose to be Your own here in time and there in eternity. You, O almighty Lord, can help; You, O gracious Lord, will help my unbelief; You, O merciful Lord, will strengthen my faith. Lord, I believe!. Amen.

If you find yourself wavering to the 'agnostic theist Christian side...this is a good prayer.

Good thought Kurt.

I guess that Christianity acknowledges that it is difficult to believe 100%, 100% of the time. But, there is a calling to move towards that 100% belief.

Jesus loved to use the term "oh, my little-faithers" (with little referring to the amount of faith) when talking to his disciples, when they demonstrated actions or ideas that were not in congruence with a belief in the heavenly kingdom.

I think as a Christian, faith is a few things. It is not just your belief, but how that belief in God manifests itself in the establishment of and dedication to Christian priorities. A person who acts in a way that produces spiritual fruit is credited with faith. A person who claims belief, but does not act in a way that demonstrates that belief, can be said to have little faith.

So, when it comes to faith, belief is just part of the picture. I would argue that acting in faith is more important than 100% rock-solid belief. In fact, based on my own experience, acting on faith actually preceded a strong belief.

There is a danger that this will turn into a discussion about the nature of salvation, which I am not trying to start. I just want to point out that faith is more than belief, and strong faith is more correlated with a changed lifestyle than with a firm belief.

What she said.

He is the author and perfecter of our faith. The word translated as believe is pistuo from pistis - faith. He said I have faith, help my lack of faith. This is the basic position of all Christians at all times. Meekness and humility is tied in this prayer. As is the same with the prayer of the publican - God have mercy on me a sinner. The two prayers are different in words but identical theologically. The attitude expressed by them is the root of the life of a Christian - throwing ourselves at the feet of our Savior and crying for mercy and help.
