How long were these in service? Guess the variable wing thing became obsolete?

Mid-sixties to the mid-nineties in the USAF. Basically Vietnam through the first Gulf War. The Aussies used then until around 2010.

A lot of the theories and techniques used in the F-111 were used in designing the B-1. The obvious ones are the variable geometry wings and terrain following radar, but a couple of the early B-1s actually used a single "escape module" instead of individual ejection seats like the F-111. The module turned out to be too big with the 4 crew members in the Bone so it was ditched.

The main idea behind variable geometry wings is to have good high speed performance (swept back) while still being able to control the jet at slower approach/landing speeds (swept forward) . Jets like the F-100 and F-104 were notoriously hard to control when landing. I think a large contributing factor for why there aren't more swing wing jets (besides complexity) is the shift in design philosophy from bombers relying on speed and low altitude to relying on stealth. The F-117 and B-2 don't need to go fast to reach their targets so they don't need radical wing sweeps that compromise landing performance.
Also see the birth of the F-14, after the failed TFX/VFAX program that tried to make the F-111 a jack of all trades. The Tomcat was hobbled with the TF-30 engines from the program and suffered from it. With the install of the F-110 engine in the A+, B, and eventually the D, it became the aircraft it was meant to be.

A few more electrical checks to pass, but here's hoping we can open this beast tonight, and get DFW back to 7 active runways.

What makes this landing special? Is it because part of DFW was shut down due to lack of demand or something else?

My assumption is that it's runway 18R-36L which was recently rebuilt.

Correct. It's the 2nd runway to convert from concrete to asphalt. Plans to convert the other 5 are still active, but no clue when we'll move forward. Damn slow-down.

Is this the correct dates of the various builds on those runways? And they're all concrete except for the two rebuilds?

East Side
17R/35L (original 1974 build)
17C/35C (original 1974 build - rebuilt 2018-2019)
17L/35R (1990 build?)
13L/31R (1996 build?)

West Side
18L/36R (original 1974 build)
18R/36L (original 1974 build - rebuilt 2020-2021)
13R/31L (1990 build?)

If it's not exactly right, it's really close. And correct, they're all concrete. Some '74 taxiways were concrete bricks, but I think we replaced the last of those with this project.
17R/35L will be the next one converted to asphalt.

No bueno. Salt water immersion = Major corrosion issues.

Going to be a long road just getting that thing back to static (much less flying) condition.

Wouldn't that depend on how long it was wet? Get it on a truck right away and start fresh water flush..

Corrosion is a big enough problem with aircraft under normal conditions, much less when exposed to something as highly corrosive as saltwater.

Going to take a complete rebuild (which can be done), but the amount of time and money involved will no doubt exceed the cost of simply acquiring a preexisting airframe (Avengers sell in the $300,000 to 400,000 range).

Surfaces fixes can be done in just a few hours, rather than in a couple of days.
Closing down an active runway can get expensive.

Makes sense. Is the timing for the change to asphalt roughly around when the useful life of the previous surface ends?
