A) they are dummies, I have tried to point this out many times
B) if they no longer claim to be killing for their belief then what would be their purpose?
C) the drug issue in mexico is not a global random assault on innocent people, you would think the mexican government would have an interest in protecting its people from the cartels....

I'm not sure about killing in the name of the Catholic faith, but I'm sure somewhere in Mexico there is someone who has killed in the name of Jesus (or because God told him to). He is likely mentally ill, but I'm sure he exists.

Not anymore, but they did for a very long time. They did it just long enough to steal children and indoctrinate an entire country into a weirdly perverse version of Catholicism that worships statues.

Don't let your own aversion to organized religion skew you. Wars, genocide, and killing all exist without religion. It may feel right and justified for you to blame "religion"; but that doesn't make it true. "Nationalism" could be a more likely cause; and even if it were, that wouldn't make it "bad". It would make SOME people's reactions to it bad.

I'm well aware you can find many examples of people claiming they killed strangers and family members "because of God" in some manner. Those people are nuts. (Technically speaking). They are unbalanced. They will find another reason to hate and kill.

Of course they do - people in general are terrible. If there are currently X number of reasons people commit atrocities, religion going the way of the dodo would just mean we have X-1 reasons.

That said, it would be pretty hard to match the level of motivation provided by a genuine belief that the creator of all of existence wants you to do this terrible thing, and that doing it will result in all kinds of super awesome rewards for all of eternity.

Without religion, there would obviously still be plenty of horrific killing justified in the minds of the killers based on however they and the group they identify with have been wronged. However, there is zero doubt that religion provides the strongest of all motivations for killing as well as acts of charity. Extreme good, but extreme bad.

Marx said that "religion is the opiate of the masses." This is absolutely true, but it's also the terrorist groups' performance enhancing drug.

The suicide bombers are true believers who think they are glorifying their religion. I don't think that those who recruit and indoctrinate these morons, and then plan these attacks, are motivated as much by religion as they are by the fact that they are sociopaths who derive great pleasure from murder and rape of innocents. For the terrorist leaders, religion is just the method they choose to facilitate their true passion: killing people.
