Not an RPG, but a tactical game. You build squads of ships, with different pilots and upgrades. You move pieces around a table, maneuvering for position. The core set is usually available for under $30 and quite fun on its own (there are two core sets actually... I recommend the the original "red" one versus the "blue" to start). It's a blast, and all of the models are top notch.

Like checkers, but each piece does their own thing. But we were only playing with like 4 pieces each, so I guess that dumbed it down even more.

CLF is actually sorta right. The rules are "easier" than chess. The basics are the same for every ship. It's like if you could build your chess set of different pieces and arrange them on the board how you wanted.
