So I see conflicting information about faced vs unfaced insulation. Should I use it, and if so, which direction does the vapor barrier face?

FYI, I am located in the Bryan/College Station area.

Paper/vapor barrier faces toward the conditioned space. If not conditioned like a garage the paper still faces to the inside of the garage

Unfaced would be used if stacking it on top of existing joist insulation

I've been told the paper goes toward the interior in cold climates and the exterior in warm climates.

I can only speak for central Texas weather with a range from 3 to 112 in my lifetime. No idea about up north.

I have personally seen in BCS mold/mildew issues on the back of drywall and paneling on demo when the paper was installed away from the conditioned space.
