The Community Benefit Charge recovers certain costs incurred by the
utility as a benefit to Austin Energy's service area customers and the
greater community. This charge includes three specific programs and
services: Service Area Lighting, Energy Efficiency Services and the
Customer Assistance Program.
The fees are basically the city's way of getting more money since there's no income tax. They've gotten outrageous over the last 5 years. I think we pay something like $40 a month in fees alone. I know one of them is to subsidize the discounts they give to seniors.
