Joni Taylor's Ags focused on response as SEC play continues vs. Gators

Texas A&M's 19-point lead dwindled away as a late lapse allowed Georgia to force overtime and ultimately, hand the Aggies their second SEC loss this season. Head coach Joni Taylor joined TexAgs Live to speak on the result and how they plan to respond vs. Florida on Thursday.

Key notes from Joni Taylor interview

  • My word for 2026 is "abide." I try not to push my word onto the team because it is a word I pray about and have thought about. My first year coming to A&M, the word was "joy." I try not to push it onto them, but you bet your bottom dollar, abide will come up in conversations we have, for sure.

  • Sunday was hard. We know how important getting a win is in this league. LSU is 0-2. I don’t think anyone saw that. The SEC is hard. The conversation we had in the locker room after the Georgia game was that our response to the game would determine the rest of our season. We have to have the right response. We have to come back and go to work. We have to figure out that one quarter here, we don't score. You look at stats, and the last 15 minutes, we score three points. We have to get that figured out. This team is not experienced in this league, with the exception of two players. How do we navigate when teams make a run? We are being solution-oriented in the conversations we are having with our team.

  • We ask a lot of Ny'Ceara Pryor. She is responsible for running our team and knowing when to score for herself and give it to others. We have to get the rest of the guards to help her. Fatmata Janneh is doing a tremendous job. She leads the SEC in rebounding and had 17 points and 18 rebounds on Sunday. Lauren Ware had a double-double. We have to get that fourth scorer. That has been our wings. We have to figure out how to get one or two of them going.

  • I think they understand they all need to push to that level. Jordan Webester went 0-for-3 from the 3-point line. That's not typical of her. Janae Kent went 0-for-3 from the 3-point line. That's not typical of her. They have to get their shot off quicker. They have to see the ball go in the hole; it will open some things up.

  • Florida is really good and plays well at home. They played South Carolina on Sunday and didn't win that game, but only lost by 11. They are led by their guards, who are elite. Their bread and butter is getting to the paint. We have to guard our yard like no other. We have to limit their points in the paint.

  • I’m so excited we can bring our former players back on Sunday. They have been tremendous. Some former players wrote letters to our team, and those letters had meaning. It was special. We will be playing a top-10 team in Vanderbilt, who just beat LSU. You don't have a chance to feel sorry for yourself. The only response is to come out and give your very best.

  • We were up by 17. We did good things vs. Georgia. We have to know how to sustain a run and keep a lead. This Florida team will make a run. What is our response to that?
