Liucci nails it on the defensive woes. Clearly Offense was non-existent, but the defense got outplayed at the LOS from the start - just did not give up the big play. I am thinking we are going to miss Elko way more than we already knew...

In most every disaster there is that first hairline crack that ultimately leads to a catastrophic failure.
Be it the undetectable crack in the fan blade of a jet engine that leads to a crash or on the wheel of a freight car that leads to a deadly derailment, I believe those of us that were at the game or perhaps watched on TV witnessed that crack in coach Fisher's ability to lead this team to the next level in the SEC.
I've been a big fan of his since the day we hired him but this game today changed all that.
I know the offensive line is horrible and probably most any quarterback would have difficulty making plays behind such a porous line but, if Jimbo starts King next week I think it's a sign he's unwilling to change and will lead to his own ultimate demise.
I was very disappointed he didn't start Max in the second half. If I'm Johnson and don't start against Miami I would seriously consider the transfer portal. Cut my losses now and move on.
Max surely didn't come to A&M to watch a quarterback like King consistently miss open receivers in stride.
Horrible team effort today and it's all on Coach Fisher. He needs to making some serious changes this week and wake this team up and fast.

Only someone with no knowledge of the modern CFB game would have the audacity to name a defensive unit that only allowed 17 points against a team who constantly won the field position battle as a contributing factor to a loss.

As was pointed out the Aggies only got passed midfield 3 times in the entire second half. That is not on the defense.

Come on my friend. All facets of the game were bad. App State ran for 181 yards and continuously imposed their will on this defense on every, single, 3rd and 4th down. Not once, did the defense stand tall and make a stop against far inferior opposition. App State's offensive line put on a clinic, today.

The offense and defense and everything in between was hot, garbage.

They knew they had to control the clock to win.

With Jimbo's offense or at least what it is billed as, the offense should have been able to jump out to an early lead so that App state could not afford to chew clock like that.

The offense only ran 7 total plays from App State's side of the field.

The defense doesn't control that.

When a defense is getting grounded like that, they need the offense to score and force the other team to not play ground and pound.

This offense couldn't score against a D2 school.
A D2 school will score on your defense regardless....that is football these days. No going back to the days of RC where u can rely on your defense to shut out the other team and score 14 points for you. Heck, even when a&m did that they couldn't put together a natty.

But an offense which outtalents the other team by multiples of 10 should have had zero problem scoring. And they underperformed waaaaaay worse than a defense that consistently had to defend the short field.

The problem, as it has been the past 4+ years with Jimbo is that everyone is looking at the wrong causes of the misfires.

Year 5 and his quarterbacks have never been better than below average.

Year 5 and his offense has yet to live up to the hype.

Year 5 and he still refuses to let a true OC run the offense.

The difference between Jimbo and Saban is that Saban knows what he is good at and is wise enough to hire people to do what he is not good at. Saban knows the game is constantly evolving and so he hires people to evolve the team to stay ahead of the curve.

Saban is humble enough to allow other minds to work with him and learn from them. Jimbo is too goddam stubborn to be the backbone of the team, guide the work ethic of the coaches and players while coming up with overall team strategy and then pay people to work the details.

This was Sherman's problem as well.

If Jimbo can grow some balls and tell his ego to **** off and make a good OC hire then the team will be nails.

But I am not betting on that. He has zero incentive to do that because he can sit pretty from here and ride that golden parachute the BMA's gave him off into the sunset.

I do not disagree that the offense was terrible and that trying to play OC is Jimbo's achilles, but I do disagree with all your excuses for the defense. There is not one good thing this team did today, not one. You argue that the offense could not score against a D2 school, but then fail to acknowledge that the same D2 school decided they were just going to run and run and run and run the ball because they wanted to control the game and A&M could not stop it. How many times on 3rd and 6 did they just run roughshod between the tackles for a 1st down?

By all means, be mad at the offense, but leave the football knowledge card at the door. The ENTIRE team was garbage.

This same argument applies to the offense. 39 offensive plays over the course of the game, 186 yards of offense.

75 yards came on the possession with the td, leaving 111 yards over the other 7 possessions.

That equates to 16 yards per each of the 7 possessions. Defense couldn't stop App State when they needed to,but it wouldn't matter if they had because the offense did practically NOTHING all game.

Additionally, 39 plays over 8 possessions equals just under 5 plays per possession. Unless you are scoring on the vast majority of so few possessions, you likely lose. And here the Ags are.

The offense and defense both sucked. There is no arguing that one played better than the other. No reason to be going back and forth on the matter. It was **** on both sides of the football.

He thinks the offense was supposed to get the defense off the field. It is the "football knowledge," thing he has going.

Your ignorance is absolutely astounding. Although why I am surprised I don't know. This football board is littered with people like you.

TOP is a measurement of two things- how well the offense controlled the ball and how effectively your defense stopped the offense.

Taken by itself TOP means very little. You can lose and completely dominate TOP. You can win and completely lose TOP. By itself it means nothing.

However when used as an adjunctive to properly assessing the performance of both offensive and defensive units and not as a standalone measure of success it can help narrow down the areas of weakness/strength which contributed to a win or loss.

In this case the defense allowed a measly 17 points under the massive strain of losing the TOP battle.

The offense was only able to run 7 plays on the opponents side of the field all game long.

When you analyze the information together it becomes clear that the defense was under duress, having to defend a short field all game long as the offense failed to consistently move the football.

App state scored 52 week 1 and 61 against UNC. This indicates that they have a very potent offense.

Our defense held a high scoring team to 17 points WHILE battling a short field all game long and when the offense could not even put the football on the opponent's side of the field much less put something in the end zone.

^^so there is some football knowledge for ya^^
The offense is what failed. The college footbalm game no longer is won at the elite level by middle school football scores of 17-10. Those days are 20 years in the past even in the SEC.

Your mind set is a losing mind set and by that I mean a mind set which is mired in the past, without a decent mind for strategy, and inability to see beyond what the paid Schills and bag holders of the program tell you to think. This is precisely the mind set of most Aggies and aggie fans.

It is a losing way of thinking and one of the many reasons the Aggies have for the past 30 years done so very little with so much.

This is THE perennial problem of the program that has followed it since RC stubbornly refused to change to the spread, thinking his demolition of Ty Detmer meant the college football landscape wasn't changing.

But yeah...keep making fun of my "football" knowledge.

Because the way you have falsely analyzed this is the same way aggie fans and the people making decisions have falsely analyzed aggie football for 30 years now. And that way of thinking has resulted in so many championships that you are absolutely right......I have no business talking.

I love how when you are confronted with stats and facts of the poster above this comment you back off without actually admitting that you were wrong.

Sack up dude.

As the poster above pointed out when each of your possessions averages 5 plays. That means that you are only averaging 1 first down per possession. So unless you are throwing Hail Mary's all day like it is some goddam Madden game, your offense didn't move the chains at all.

All. Game. Long.

That is a more catastrophic failure than a defense that allowed a team averaging over 50 points a game coming into today a measly 17 points especially when 7 were scored because our offense gave them the ball inside our own 20.

By that metric and any way you cut it, the defense did their job under extreme duress.

It was the offense that imploded.

Sack up to what? I do not think there was anything good from the A&M side on this game, offense nor defense. They were both terrible. If you think App State's OL looking all world against our DL is good, then we just disagree. Their TOP can be attributed to both our offense's inability to move the ball and our defense's inability to stop them.

I am simply saying there are zero excuses for any unit, it really is not that complicated on what my take is and half of it is agreeing with you.

Look, if they had been mixing it up all over the field, I would give the defense some reprieve, but they just ran it and ran it and ran it and ran it, from start to finish. I personally, cannot overlook that context. I like stats, yours are legit, but you have to also look at how they accomplished what they did.

Sumlin was 36-14 in his first 50 games and Saturday's loss dropped Fisher to 35-15 in his first 50.

Billy hit it 100%.....I thought this game was just like the Colorado game last year where we just were so inept. But I was embarrassed this week more then any other game I watched at home. Coaching, offense, defense and kicking all were disappointing. We could have easily lost so much worse. Our offense was sooo bad, all aspects of it. I kept hearing, talent, talent, talent, but what is talent without coaching and direction. So disappointing, every year seem to be overinflated expectations every year leads to disappointed fan base. I would not be surprised after watching these first two game, that we could realistically go 4-8....arghhh.

LOL! You think the defense didn't contribute to the loss. You have no idea what you are talking about. NONE! They were better than the offense but awful at best.

They couldn't get off the field on the game's second series. They got whipped by guys 40-50lbs lighter all game long. Their job is to make the offense punt or get a takeaway. If an F+ is a thing, that's the grade.

When A&M was ball-controlling teams in 2019 and 20, the talk was about how our online was dominating and demoralizing dlines.

I want to applaud Nuno and Luicci for having some Olin like candor here on this performance by the football team. While it was hinted at here on the podcast, I believe more warranted criticism needs to fall on Jimbo here. Going back to 2020, this is 3 years in a row with slow starts to the season which is indicative of a coaching problem.

However, I think there needs to be a larger picture discussion on the warranted criticism of Jimbo preparing this team to play for this game and having this pathetic loss in season 5 of his tenure. Additionally, while there's this "appearance" of a much improved program under him from Sumlin, the reality is his record is actually 1 game worse through the 1st 50 games. Now, I do want to recognize that I actually do think the talent is markedly better, but Jimbo, and even some of the fan base, have already been resting on laurels that don't exist. As Bill Parcells said, "You are what your record says you are."

While I appreciate being positive, I think site needs to be truthful like it was in this podcast. This kind of realism is what I think these players need to hear more of and more importantly the coaches, starting with Jimbo. While he says all the right things and I believe in his ability to bring us success, Jimbo needs to own the fact that starting in the offseason that his leadership of "buying into the hype" is what got us this loss yesterday. These players are the best talent we've ever had, and Jimbo and his staff need to lead like they did initially instilling grit, effort, and drive and not entitlement like those fools down in Austin. Along with this Jimbo needs to be open to the fact that his game plans aren't working, and he needs to be more flexible. I'm not saying Jimbo needs to change his offense or defense, but it definitely appears that he needs to change his mindset.

Jimbo isn't going anywhere, so hopefully, the media capitalizes on this opportunity to tell him the truth an help remind him and the team of his alignment with the Aggie values that made him so promising to begin with. This season doesn't have to be lost, but they've got to quickly get back on track to who they are, Fightin' Texas Aggies.

I'm looking directly at the defensive line. We lost a bunch of seniors and great players, yet not one ounce of concern from Lucci and the entire texags staff coming into this year. Hell, we were told that the Dline was gonna be BETTER lol.
