Burns: 2021 Aggies indicative of Jimbo Fisher's ability to make key adjustments

Key notes from Peter Burns interview

  • I still want LSU to hire Brian Kelly. Chris Doering and I talked about it on the show, saying it was all fine and good that they rallied around Ed Orgeron a couple of weeks ago, but now they’ve run into a buzz saw in Ole Miss. Can they find it again? I don’t think they have a coordinator they can trust to fix it again.

  • Whenever you’re playing golf, and you look up, you’re like, “I’m playing well. If only I didn’t have that double bogey on three.” That’s how it feels with Texas A&M. Jimbo Fisher has a track record of teams getting better as the season goes on. Can we run the ball more? Can we put Zach Calzada in different positions to make him feel more comfortable? They have found a way to do that. That’s what Jimbo is so good at, adjustments.

  • I get upset as an LSU fan knowing that you have Jimbo, who can get that offense rolling, and Mike Elko, who runs a great defense. As an LSU fan, I’m still in a tizzy over here.

  • It is disappointing to look back at A&M and how they started the season because with Jalen Wydermyer, Ainias Smith, Devon Achane and Isaiah Spiller, they’re just as explosive as anybody in the playmaking department. I’d even argue they have more than Ole Miss does. It’s just that Lane Kiffin’s playcalling puts them in a different position.

  • If we had a 12-team playoff, you could not tell me that Texas A&M was not one of the teams trending toward the playoff, and they’d be dangerous as hell to face.

  • We’re eight weeks into the season, and I can’t get a read on Mississippi State and Auburn. We saw Auburn almost beat Penn State, and then they struggled with Georgia State. They beat LSU. If Harsin can get this team behind them, weird things happen in the Iron Bowl.

  • Florida-Georgia is one of those games where if Georgia torches them, which could be the case, Dan Mullen could be forced to make a change to his staff. It could put him into a situation where the seat is warm going into 2022. I’m curious to see how Kirby Smart handles having two healthy quarterbacks because JT Daniels is expected to be healthy.

  • Anytime you were scoreless at halftime in Lawrence, Kansas, in an 11 a.m. game, you know it’s tough. Everyone is talking about the play Caeleb Williams made where he stole the ball from his running back. Great play, but let’s look at the first three quarters. It’s Kansas. They’re not very good. Right now, if it was A&M-Oklahoma, I’d bet my life savings on Texas A&M, and it’s not even close.

And it was an illegal forward handoff because he crossed the scrimmage line and then reversed, or forward lateral the refs gifted OU.
