During Tuesday's edition of TexAgs Radio, Texas A&M head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle joined in-studio to discuss what he has seen from the Maroon & White this fall and Friday's upcoming scrimmage with the Houston Cougars at Olsen Field.
Key notes from Jim Schlossnagle interview
- It's going great in Aggieland. I'm adjusting well, just working from the time my feet hit the ground in the morning till bedtime. Whether it's building the program, recruiting. or now with fall ball. I had a great dinner last night with coach Mark Johnson and his wife. Excited to be here.
- I think anytime you get to raise the experience level of your team it's good. I think this will be like a controlled practice in spring training for NFL teams. We will try to make it as game-like as possible, but we might play some situational ball as well. I think this is a great experience and a chance to see your guys under the lights. We start at 6, but we're playing 10 innings, so come out whenever you can make it, we'll be playing till about 10 o'clock.
- I want us to be a team that throws strikes and does not give up free bases defensively. Offensively, I want us to be able to win in multiple ways. I want to be a multiple offense that can hit for power, average, and have some speed in the lineup. To sum it up, I want my teams here to be known for their athleticism. I want to be conservative defensively, aggressive offensively. Hopefully, we start the process of working our way there this season.
- I think guys have been very interested in learning within the program. Everything we are doing is new for these guys, and they are immersing themselves in it. Guys have been super receptive to coaches and how were teaching things. I believe the more comfortable they get with us, the better they will be.
- Micah Dallas transferred from Texas Tech. He's never pitched in the SEC, but I've seen a lot of him and know what we're going to get. Some other guys, you see it one day, and you don't the next. That's what's so crucial about Friday night. It gives you an opportunity to see these guys under the brightest of lights.
- A lot of people talk about how we have to keep recruiting kids once they are committed against the 30 other major league teams. You also have to recruit the guys off of your team from taking the money as a junior to go the draft as a 14th round pick for $100,000. I think NIL is a way to help keep those kids in school, help them finish their degrees, and still make money while in school.
- I think every athletic director at schools like Texas A&M, LSU, and Mississippi State would be all for full scholarships in baseball with no other things considered, but there are 300 D1 baseball schools, and everyone's vote counts the same in a situation like this. I would love for us to get to a point where we have a 25-man roster of scholarship baseball players.
