Burns: A&M has perfect opportunity to 'get right' against Mississippi State

Key notes from Peter Burns interview

  • I was riding with the Aggies this weekend. I missed the boat on that. I knew there were issues on the offensive line, but I didn't think they'd struggle the way they did. I thought they'd be able to put eight in the box and make KJ Jefferson make some tight throws, and to his credit, he did. Kendal Briles got them in the right spots. Treylon Burks is an NFL stud in the makings. Now it's time to recalibrate in College Station.

  • How you fix it is going into the DeLorean and trying to get guys to come back for one more year, especially on the offensive line. Of course, that's not doable.

  • It seems like after every single play Zach Calzada is looking over to the side, and Jimbo is giving him coaching 101. It's not necessarily that Calzada is playing tight but that the offensive line isn't gelling. Gene Chizik told us in-studio during the game that if you don't have a line, you have no shot. I don't think you place that all on Calzada. Instead, they just ran into a buzzsaw.

  • Arkansas football reminds me of that one basketball team in March Madness with a bunch of seniors from a midmajor that ruins everyone's bracket.

  • The wheels are a little wobbly for Mississippi State. They didn't even look great against Louisiana Tech. They got hosed against Memphis and lost to LSU this week. Teams have figured out this air raid offense, and I think Mike Elko will look at how other teams have done it. They'll likely drop seven or eight into coverage, get pressure and force Will Rogers to make a mistake. If you had to cherry-pick an SEC opponent to get right against, Mississippi State might be it.

  • The guys that are smart have utilized the transfer portal to take advantage of places where they have issues to shore up immediately. You're seeing more teams like Arkansas with fifth or sixth-year seniors who weren't good enough to play in the NFL but are good enough to contribute still in college football. I think the portal is helping the sport cause this chaos. We've already had 25 ranked teams lose this early, which is the most since they started doing the polls in the 30s.

  • We got punch-drunk on Ole Miss being able to score a bunch on Alabama last year. As much as people want that to happen for even more chaos, Alabama is just a machine. They never start slow, and that's why they've won 100-straight games against unranked opponents. There is quite a lot of difference between these two teams, and. I don't see a game plan for Ole Miss to win this game.

  • Here I am doubting the Hogs once again. There has been so much emotion for Arkansas, but at some point, talent is going to beat great coaching. That's what's going to happen with Georgia. I think Arkansas fans should enjoy being the darling of college football, but the elites continue to be one step ahead of everybody. We're on a collision course for Alabama to meet Georgia in Atlanta and possibly again in the College Football Playoff.

My only hope is he doesn't rely on same game plan, expecting different results. The team will do the best they can. It is what it is. Just give them a chance.

If Fisher forces the same offensive game plan, AGAIN, then for mental health reasons I may have to stop paying so much attention to Aggie foots. Become more of a Cowboy fan....never have any expectations and expect the worse.

I do worry that Fisher does not have the capability to think outside of his own box. Square peg....round hole.
