Key notes from Peter Burns interview

  • The College World Series is one of my favorite events every single year for a college baseball event. It is one of those things that even if your team isn't here and playing, you can show up here and have a great time. The people here in Omaha are what makes the two weeks so great. That, and the steaks and alcohol. There are many fans that once they come here to see their team, that keep coming back and making return trips. That says a lot in my mind.

  • NC State is such an underdog from where they were at the beginning of the season. In my mind, Vanderbilt has the mental edge going into these two games. They know what is in front of them. They have that sharpness that they know if they lose, they're going home; the dream is done. It's like the difference between live TV and taped TV. I think Kumar Rocker will be fantastic. I'm excited to see him tonight. The biggest question for me is who do they pitch when they force the if-necessary game.

  • The Mississippi State fans are here in Omaha and absolutely enjoying themselves. They tore up the town the other night after their comeback win over Virginia. If they get Will Bednar back for the championship series, they will be in a great spot. I think in my mind that Mississippi State fans want a baseball title more than they even want one in football. College baseball means that much to them.

  • I think we have an NC State/Mississippi State final. Neither of those programs has ever won a title, so that it would be great theatre. But I think the Bulldogs will win it all and get their first title.

  • I think Jay Johnson is a good hire. He will go in there knowing the pressure that comes with that job. It's just different there. You cant lose a midweek game to McNeese State there without people wanting to fire you. He's ready for that challenge.

  • Jim Schlossnagle is a great hire at Texas A&M. I'm super excited to see how he capitalizes on his Texas recruiting ties and gets the ball rolling in Aggieland. The goal for them is Omaha. So it'll be interesting to watch how soon that happens.

Sorry to inform you guys but Omaha is not better than it used to be. They cheap out a little more and more each year on things. Going ticketless is a cave in to control and transaction fees to the powers that be to get into the games. The outside ticket market has always been vibrant and lots of fun. It let anyone partying it up near the park a last minute chance to easily go to the game. Now you have to go online or pray for good phone service to transfer tickets from person to person. Walk in with people and pay them. The locals who have good seats and older are intimidated and just eat extras etc I have 13 years straight years worth of ticket memorabilia from all over the stadium that I cherish. Guess that's gone. The crowds actually in the stadium are not good despite what tickets sales are. I'm sure concessions has suffered but I'm sure that won't be externally mentioned.

Even down to the cups with th teams on them. Used to be ready to go day one back in the day. It slides back a day or two every year. As of Monday when I left there were still no cups with the 2021 teams on them. People like those too. It's to great of an event to cheap out and cut corners. It truly is a special event that deserves absolute effort to preserve the purity and fun that is college baseball.

Omaha has a 25 year contract that started in 2011. My guess is they start stepping it back up again in 10 years. I truly hope I'm wrong.
