Mercy. Literally.

No. 20 Texas A&M run-ruled the Prairie View Panthers 30-2 in seven innings on a cold and misty Wednesday night at Olsen Field. The Panthers' inability to throw strikes and play clean defense combined with Aggie hitters jumping on the few pitches that were actually in the strike zone led to the incredibly lopsided contest.

A&M's 30 runs are the third-most in program history and the highest offensive output since 1991 when the Aggies beat Westmont 31-2. The Aggies fell just two runs shy of tying the school record for runs in a single game – a record that dates back to a 32-7 victory over SMU in 1936.

"That's really what an offense that's working together looks like and feels like," said Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress. "I know our players feel really good about it. For me, I couldn't be more proud of where we are at this point."

Every Aggie that recorded a plate appearance tonight also scored at least one run.

"We got guys off the bench and into the game, and they're certainly not going to give at-bats away," said Rob Childress.

The outcome was clear from the very first inning when the Ags scored 10 runs on just four hits. By the time the Panthers recorded the first out in the inning, nine Aggies had crossed the plate. Prairie View starter Derrick Curry was forced to depart after five batters, having walked two and plunking two. A&M would add 17 more runs in a second inning that saw 22 Aggies come to bat. In total, the Aggies would bring home 30 on 18 hits while working 8 walks on the night.

"You can have fun with it, but in the end, every pitch counts and every game counts, so you got to make sure you take care of business," said sophomore first baseman/outfielder Zane Schmidt.

Schmidt certainly took care of business, finishing the ballgame 4-for-6 with three singles, a double, three runs scored and three more driven in. Schmidt was one of five Aggies with a multi-hit outing.

"(Schmidt has) got a great approach," said Rob Childress. "He's going to make you throw it over the plate, and when you do, he usually doesn't miss it."

Redshirt-freshman Jonathan Childress made his first start since suffering an elbow injury in March of 2019 that required Tommy John surgery to repair. Childress tossed three scoreless-innings while punching out three and allowing just one hit. He threw 46 pitches.

Jonathan Childress made his first start since Tommy John surgery and threw three scoreless innings.

"It's been a rollercoaster; a lot of ups and a lot of downs," said Jonathan Childress. "You look forward to all of the big things like throwing for the first time after you have surgery, then getting on the mound for the first time. Tonight was really special."

The night after Rody Barker exited the ballgame after being hit with a pitch in the face, Logan Sartori – who is off to a stellar start to 2020, hitting .400 on the young season – found himself in a similar situation. Sartori caught a fastball up around his head in his only plate appearance in the first inning. He would continue and later score in the frame but was ultimately pinch-hit for by Ty Coleman. Sartori said he was fine following the game despite sporting a very noticeable goose egg above his left eyebrow.

Texas A&M baseball returns to Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park on Friday as the Aggies begin a three-game series with the Army Black Knights. First pitch is slated for 6:32 p.m. and All-American lefthander Asa Lacy will be on the mound for the Ags.
