On Sunday afternoon, the No. 16 Texas A&M Aggies (20-5, 8-4 SEC) took down the No. 25 Tennessee Lady Volunteers (17-8, 7-5 SEC) on the road in Knoxville. Returning guard Chennedy Carter led the Aggies to a 73-71 victory over the Volunteers, recording a season-high of 37 total points.

Carter saw her first action since January on Thursday, but made her first start since her injury on Sunday at Tennessee.

The Lady Volunteers came into Sunday on a three-game losing streak. Despite an energetic home crowd of over 12,000, the Lady Vols fell into a slump after an early lead and after the second quarter never managed to pass the Aggies. The Aggies forced Tennessee to 16 turnovers, scoring 19 points as a direct result. Despite 19- and 18-point performances by Rae Burnell and Rennia Davis, the Lady Volunteers were unable to match the Aggies’ superior dominance from the free-throw line. A&M went 28 of 33 at the line, and the Volunteers were just 6 of 16 on attempts.

From the first quarter, the court belonged to Chennedy Carter. The contest was Carter’s first start since an ankle injury against LSU back in early January. The junior guard put up a season-high 37 points against the Lady Vols and shot 14/16 on field goals, making her return into conference play a resounding presence to be reckoned with.

Junior forward N’dea Jones came up with 16 rebounds and 8 total points, coming up just short to end her 12-game consecutive double-double streak. Shambria Washington followed Carter with 10 points.

At 8-4, the Aggies are currently tied for 4th in SEC conference standings. The win over ranked conference opponent Tennessee continues to elevate the Aggies’ chances of hosting in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

The Aggies will once again hit the road to play Georgia on Thursday, February 20th at 6:00 p.m.
