Coming off a sub-par weekend against Texas-Arlington and Abilene Christian, it was hard to know where the Aggie softball team stood.
While there are still no definitive answers, things did not look promising on Thursday night.
The Aggie bats struggled the whole game, only getting two hits to the Cowgirls’ five in the contest. The game started slow with good pitching and minimal hits from both teams.

Kayla Poynter tossed seven innings of five-hit ball, while allowing just one run. However, the A&M offense failed to give Poynter any run support.
However, in the 5th inning, an error by Jourdyn Campbell on what could have been a double-play to end the inning put two runners in scoring position for McNeese. An RBI single by the next batter, Sara Geier, would be all the Cowgirls needed.
The Aggies threatened in the bottom half of the 7th. A&M got the potential tying run to second with two outs, but a ground out to first ended any hope that the Ags had for a comeback.
Kayla Poynter pitched well, fanning five and stranding four Cowgirls on base throughout the game. But with the offense not producing, she could only do so much.
“My mentality going into every game is focus on what I can control,” said Poynter. “With everything that happens, I just focus on one pitch at a time.”
The lack of an A&M offensive attack left head coach Jo Evans searching for answers.
“It’s a matter of having confidence in what you’re doing… and yet, I thought tonight didn’t show maturity,” said Evans. “We’ve put ourselves in so many games behind the eight-ball, and it’s been challenging to get anything done. I just wanna see us play with a lot more energy, enthusiasm and passion for the game.”
Aggie softball returns to Davis Diamond tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. to face off against Lamar. The ballgame will be the first of a five-game weekend showing in the Aggie Invitational.
