Notes from Liucci’s breakdown on Blades

  • Texas A&M signed Elijah Blades to come in and start.

  • They won a pretty big battle with Oregon for Blades. It was one of the more difficult recruitments to win.

  • He’s a tall, long and extremely athletic cover man. Excellent ball skills and he can quickly switch his feet. There’s a reason he’s their top corner coming in. With regards to his quickness, agility and how fast he can turn his hips, he’s starting to turn a lot of heads inside the program.

  • Early returns are that he’s going to be every bit as good as advertised. But, of course, he’s got that JUCO to big-time college football jump to make.

  • He was a big-time recruit out of high school but went to JUCO and got even bigger. I like guys like that.

  • They would’ve loved to have Blades here in the spring. If that were the case, he’d be definitely starting week one. We don’t know when he’s going to be the starter until they get to fall camp and start getting some reps.

  • Renfro and Myles Jones had good springs. Charles Oliver is a senior. There’s some serious competition for Elijah to overcome. I’m not sure throwing Blades in there immediately is the right way to go from a locker room standpoint. He’ll have to earn his start, and he might’ve already done that in the offseason. We don’t know yet.

  • Leon O’Neal, Micheal Clemons, Anthony Hines and Elijah Blades have the capability to flip the way we think about this Texas A&M defense in a hurry. Of those four guys, three of them were recruited by everyone in the country. All four of them have shown they can do it. If three of those four players click, I think Mike Elko’s defense could be really good, and it could change the outlook of the season.

  • Blades was the No. 1 JUCO corner in the country this year. Big recruit out of high school who goes to JUCO and gets even better. He was so good at the JUCO level that they told us there is nobody better than him in the country.

  • I think that Blades could provide the ability to return kicks. Roshauud Paul had some big kick returns last year, though. You’ve got Blades, and you’ve got Jashaun Corbin as well. Ainias Smith is another one who can really impact the return game.

  • Blades reminds me of a guy you would watch at Oregon or USC and go, “man, that league has some speed.” If you watch his tape, he flashes that West Coast speed. It’s dynamic, world-class speed.

  • Even if he were 6-2, 180 at the time he came in, that would’ve been fine. The more important questions are: can you cover? Can you make plays on the football? Everything about him says he can. If he can do that, other players will fall into place. You’d feel really good about one of those other three corners we mentioned to be a really solid player. That doesn’t even include players coming in, like Erick Young, who might crack that rotation at some point as well.

Very Encouraging. Blades starting vs TX St, would be a good omen.
