Key notes from Rob Childress interview

  • Despite the weather, I think we’ll be able to get tonight’s game in. It’ll be a little damp and chilly, but we’ve practiced in worse this preseason.

  • It’s certainly a first for me to begin the season by starting five straight left-handed pitchers. Dustin Saenz and Jake Nelson were great in relief. Well use Jozwiak in relief tonight then have him ready for Friday’s game.

  • Dustin Saenz has grown up. He is taking care of business in every facet of his life. Usually when you do that it seems to carry over onto the baseball field. He’ll start tonight’s game vs SFA.

  • There’re still some guys I want to see on the mound. You’re going to see a lot of different pitchers in the next few games. If we didn’t have the depth we do on the left, we would feel exposed after starting so many left-handed pitchers this past weekend. Thankfully we do. It's a tribute to our recruiting. We’ve not only gotten left handed pitchers, but talented pitchers.

  • John Doxakis was named the SEC pitcher of the week which he definitely deserved. All coaches are conscious of pitch count, so to see him pitch so efficiently was remarkable. Jozwiak came in behind him and did a good job too.

  • I felt like we took everything Fordham wanted to do offensively away from them. We knew they liked to bunt and steal bases. They only went 1-2 on stolen base attempts. I doubt that happens to them again this season.

  • I was really proud of Jonathon Childress in his first start. He did an incredible job of dealing with the delays and bouncing back from hitting a guy in the first.

  • Bryce Miller is going to be a key guy for us out of the bullpen this upcoming weekend as well as for the entire season.

  • Bryce Blaum did a wonderful job leading off for us. Shewmake walked three times, but he’s like the stock market, he won’t stay down for long. Mikey Hoehner did a great job behind the plate. Him and Blaum play with great energy and their motor is contiguous.

  • I’m looking for us to dominate the strike zone on the mound like we did last weekend. We've only walked four guys so far this season. We need to keep that up. I want us to continue playing clean defense. Offensively, we need to put pressure on our opponents in every inning even if we aren’t scoring every inning.
