Carter scores 31 but Aggies fall to No. 2 Mississippi State, 76-55
The No. 17 Aggie women’s basketball team (20-7, 9-4 SEC) traveled to take on No. 2 Mississippi State (28-0), falling to the Bulldogs 76-55 in Starkville. With the victory for the Bulldogs, they clinched the SEC regular-season championship.
The Bulldogs dominated in all aspects of the game today — they finished just under 48% from beyond the arc and did a good job of attacking the lane. Victoria Vivians led Mississippi State on offense, dropping 26 points and shooting 5-7 from downtown. In addition to Vivians, four other players finished with double-digit points.
With Khaalia Hillsman and Chennedy Carter sitting out the first five minutes of the game due to disciplinary action, the Bulldogs were able to take advantage and get ahead early. Mississippi State jumped out to a quick lead thanks to strong three-point shooting — just under half of the Bulldog’s points came from three-pointers. A&M was able to cut the lead down to nine heading into halftime, but in the end were not able to hold off the Bulldog’s offensive attack.
Carter led the offense for the Maroon and White, scoring 31 points. Anriel Howard was second on the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds, logging another double-double. Danni Williams had an uncharacteristic day and finished with just one point and was 0-7 from the field.
The Aggies were troubled again with turnovers — committing 16, which the Bulldogs turned into 16 points.
The Aggies return to action on the road against Arkansas on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network +.
